Do any of you Uber to work out of town 5 days a week ? (self.Blind)
submitted by BlindBear902
I was looking at some jobs 25-30 miles away from my home and I noticed it would cost around 80$ a day and 1600$ a month which is extremely expensive.

I would not take a job like that unless I absolutely had to. I currently work from home and I’m hoping to keep it that way. A short commute is good, but nothing beats no commute at all. :)

I do agree with that although I would say that opportunities don't come up unless you're doing something already. If you're working from home, communicating with people and running a business, which is what I'll be doing once I have finished writing this post, then that's great. I usually work in a nearby big city let's say one to three days a week and that's good for the soul. I used to commute into that big city every working day and it blew. I would agree with you unless the alternative was to sit at home not working which is bad in every way something can be bad.

I second this. Work from home if at all possible.

If you are in the US check to see if your state had a paratransit division. That may be what you want. Note that some services are better funded and staffed than others so you have to make sure they'd actually work for you with being on time etc. Good luck!

At one time I was able to, but Uber and Lyft have been raising prices for years. When the pandemic hit, the rates skyrocketed. I just read they are adding a gas fee now. It is insane! Last driver I had (about 2 years ago) said they only got 40% of the fare!

I do know that some counties are starting to provide discounts for people with disabilities, but I have only heard of one in Los Angeles.

Are you in the US?

In my state there is a state agency that provides funds toward transportation expenses for disabled, working people.

I don't know if the funds can be used for UBER, but I know people who have employed a driver (often a member of the family, or a friend) to drive them to and from work. Nobody has shared what the state pays for this, but it would be worth checking into, depending on where you live.

I'm in Ohio, and the agency here is Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities:

That is a great program that your State has. unfortunately here In MA We have something called Dial A Ride but it only goes within a 3 miles radius and you can go anywhere in town. The state does give free rides to any medical appointment if needed but that’s about it.

Commuting to work is miserable even before you take into account the cost. I did it for several years, and all the while I thought I didn't like it. Then when I finally got to stop doing it I realised how much it was really messing up my life. I guess that 25 to 30 mile uber will take a good forty five minutes depending on what sort of route it is, if not more. That is basically what my old commute was and you have to figure that you're doing basically a whole extra day's worth of work every week, just to get to work. You don't want to do that and then pay top dollar for the privilege, that sucks.

I would definitely grind my teeth, do it and hang the expense if it was that or sit at home. Never ever just sit at home. Sitting at home leads to isolation, and more sitting at home. But knowing what I know now, I would work very hard to move closer, find a better job nearer to me, or somehow avoid commuting if I possibly could. Even if you could find someone who goes the same way who you could carpool with, I'm sure they'd be happy to split the gas bill with you. Or find someone who owns a Tesla and can drive around for next to nothing...

The cost of Uber was why I lost my last job. It would have cost around 50 a day for less than 30 miles round trip 4x a week. No thank you...

Yeah and I live in a small Town in Massachusetts and sometimes it was hard to land a Uber driver for the time I needed.
GreenTigerzord 3 points 1y ago
Most of MA is small towns, Boston and Wormtown not withstanding. I commute Wormtown to Northborough and that's half an hour one way. At least I own my own ride and have a driver. 🤷‍♂️

See if you can a move there or b find a job nearer home. It doesn’t always work this way I agree. The other option is if possible see if it’s really have to be far away whether you can work virtually or do a combo between 1 or 2 days in office and some at home.

My job is a couple towns over and when I quit driving last year I had to make a couple trips to the office. It was $50 a day. Not sustainable for an entire work week. Thankfully my company has declared that my department will not return to full time office work because now an Uber is $75 to get there and back. It’s only 8.5 miles from my house. Ouch.
