Shortcut keys question / NVDA (self.Blind)
submitted by DecisionThot
Hello.. I have a quick question regarding shortcut keys.

What is the shortcut key command for closing a foreground pop up? For the life of me I cannot find the command for that anywhere and nothing I try is working.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I think it can depend on the type of pop up and the browser. F6 has worked for me recently on some pop up content. Alt + N is a command I’ve used in the past, but that was in Internet Explorer.

Is it in a separate window? If so, alt + F4.
If it is inline on a webpage, there is no shortcut. You need to find a close button if it has one. Inaccessible pop-ups might not have a labeled button or something a keyboard can gain focus on. Only way to close these would be to visually click on a X.

Agree with all this. Wanted to add that sometimes ESC works, depending on how the site is coded. And to get to the close/x button (if it exists accessibly), you usually must go backwards in the reading order from the popup text. And then sometimes, if it is very inaccessible, you may have to refresh the whole page.

It's the kind of pop-up that doesn't open in a new tab or window, but in the same window you are currently viewing. Most often for me in the US, they are cookie disclosures. These ones aren't so bad because they don't block the content of the page much. The worst ones show up on nearly every online retailer's website--they're the ones that ask for your email address and offer 10% off your first order or something. They are awful and I hate them. If hitting esc doesn't work, it can be tough to get them to go away.

I've also found that sometimes, these appear at the bottom of the DOM. Pressing CTRL+End in browse mode might move you to them, or if they have been coded as a dialog which doesn't gain focus NVDA will announce dialog when you hit ctrl+end and you can press space to activate that part of the window.
