Hello, I'm visually impaired (low vision). Just wanted to ask what you guys like to do in your free time.
BlindManOnFire16 points1y ago
When my wife works and I'm alone I'm online all the time.
When she's home then we walk through the local parks, dance at the club, and ride a bicycle built for two.
I've got a blind bucket list and we try to do something on my list once a month, too.
sicklixix [OP]4 points1y ago
If it's ok to ask, what are some things on your bucket list ?
BlindManOnFire6 points1y ago

BooksDogsMaps9 points1y ago
Audiobooks, walks in nature with my guide dog, colouring in dogs (I used to love painting, but my vision got so bad that I have to zoom in so much that it‘s nearly impossible to get proportions right). I also do loads of volunteering, but decided to reduce my number of involvements as some of them aren‘t making me as happy and fulfilled as I hoped and as I would expect something I give my spare time to.
valiant80861 points1y ago
Have you tried a cc tv?
BooksDogsMaps1 points1y ago
Yes, but I need to zoom in too much on that as well.
xmachinaxxx9 points1y ago
Currently I’m baking a lot more. It wasn’t my thing before becoming VI so it’s out of boredom mostly, but I’m enjoying it. Years ago I tried to learn how to play the ukulele and I’ve been thinking of taking it up again. I can only binge so much tv and audiobooks.
sicklixix [OP]3 points1y ago
Do you use any special tools to help you bake? I find it hard to do anything in the kitchen.
xmachinaxxx6 points1y ago
I use large print measuring cups, my iPad or phone magnifier and my son’s or husband’s eyes if need be.
DHamlinMusic8 points1y ago
Watching TV (mainly anime), reading, stuff on my phone (discord, facebook, reddit), also have an infant so that takes a lot of my time. Also play piano, though less since going blind, working on braille reading/writing, plus there’s waiting for my local card shop to open back up for in person events so I can play Magic the Gathering again and figure out how best to go about that with no useable sight.
valiant80861 points1y ago
also my great uncle used to call pianos piannas pie anna's. Course, since I got started, poison was always, always pronounced pizon, and the harmonica was Harmanikee har mon ik ee, rofl. He always talked that way, it wasn't put on. What a glorious backwoodsman he was. Now I miss him, lol.
valiant80861 points1y ago
Did you slow down the piano stuff because you're blind now? Because there's not really any extra difficulties in terms of piano playing if you're just blind that I can think of. I know some excellent blind piano players.
Different_Hope_34348 points1y ago
Read on my tablet with dark contrast so it's easy to read or auto books. And drawing on the procreate and ibis paint x apps because I can zoom in on whatever I'm working on
sicklixix [OP]4 points1y ago
What kind of things do you draw?
Different_Hope_34345 points1y ago
Stuff from books shows and video games I like. I love animal crossing and have some cute fanarts I made
BlindBear9021 points1y ago
You should post some of your drawings.
6-20PM5 points1y ago
Amateur radio or shortwave radio and tandem cycling. The local mountains have skiing for the blind.
redmarus5 points1y ago
I listen to a lot of music and smoke a lot of weed and play The Long Dark because it's one of the more VI friendly games I've played (high contrast, b&w with pops of bright color and gameplay that doesn't require too quick reflexes). Theoretically I'd have more hobbies if my life wasn't the toilet but that's what I've got going for me.
sicklixix [OP]1 points1y ago
May I ask why you say your life is the toilet ? I don't mean to be intrusive , just curious.
redmarus3 points1y ago
Just going through a lot right now. Family stuff, housing issues, that kind of thing.
SoapyRiley5 points1y ago
I read. Whether jumbo print or braille. I also sew when I have the time. I’ll start gardening now that I have my own yard again. I love being able to grow my own food.
Simply_Limeade2 points1y ago
I've also currently picked up gardening. I'm terrified of snakes though so I always take my dog out with me. I have a small container garden that organizes things nicely. So I can remember which green thing is which.
SoapyRiley2 points1y ago
I use touch or smell. Tomato plants smell very pungent and strawberry plants have those nice crinkle leaves. Apple trees are flat pointy and fuzzy. Blueberries are a little waxy and smaller. I only tend to get confused when seedlings have weeds next to them.
Simply_Limeade2 points1y ago
For sure. Lucky I also have a seeing eye spouse. Lol
Jabez775 points1y ago
Play my horn. I am a musician and am trying to pick up more jazz while I can still see, but looking forward to still playing when I can’t.
DHamlinMusic5 points1y ago
Yeah, I am a pianist and am having to learn to read braille music.
Jabez773 points1y ago
Learn jazz my dude!
DHamlinMusic5 points1y ago
I am classically trained, plus I was a sight reader which doesn’t work when you cannot see the book in general lol.
impablomations3 points1y ago
Even after 30+ years I could never learn to sight read. Tried many times but I just couldn't do it. Playing by ear for so long probably made playing music one of the few things that wasn't hugely impacted by sight loss since I barely looked at the keyboard anyway.
Simply_Limeade3 points1y ago
Gardening, some video games, watching cartoons, listening to creepy pasta and murder documentaries. Begrudgingly existing. Anxiety eating but unfortunately never gaining weight. Napping because trying to actually see things is really exhausting. Planning my gay agenda. The usual.
sicklixix [OP]1 points1y ago
If you don't mind me asking, what's your gay agenda ? Hope it's not a typo for day lol.
Simply_Limeade1 points1y ago
Not a typo, just a joke. I mean any agenda is a gay agenda if you roll that way. Lol
sicklixix [OP]1 points1y ago
What's your gay agenda for today then ?
Simply_Limeade1 points1y ago
Nothing special. Clean, be a couch potato, watch Adventure Time, contemplate reality.
blind_cowboy3 points1y ago
Hunting, fishing, playing guitar, fixing firearms, smoking large chunks of meat on one of my smokers, reading, building things, I could go on and on. I am a rangers, cowboys, and horns fan.
valiant80861 points1y ago
Also I love computers, and I enjoy building one from time to time when I get enough money haha.
valiant80861 points1y ago
Lol, person after my own heart. I live on a farm so I love tractors. I own one and recently restored another one with my dad. Good times! I like driving things, that includes tractors but also side by side utility vehicles and four wheelers/quads.
blind_cowboy1 points1y ago
Like you, I live on a farm. It’s not a working farm at the moment. I have an LS tractor and a Polaris ranger 800.
valiant80861 points1y ago
No experience with LS yet. I've heard one, a guy with a saw mill used one to unload our trailer when we brought some logs to have him turn into lumber.
How do you like the ranger? For the longest time the engine was pretty bad news on those but it's been better since 2016 or so. Every once in a while somebody got a good one though. They did all sorts of goofy things like burn oil and have misfiring issues, stalling while idling, etc. When we bought our UTV, we tried a Ranger 800 and frankly it ran really nice and it was quiet and very smooth. But we went for Kubota RTVX1120d. Those things are great for blind people because they can go really, really slow and still have plenty of torque if you're crawling in really rugged environment. Also the hydro holds back like nobody's business so you can inch your way down a steep decline without having to keep track with the breaks. It's not terribly quiet since it's a diesel. I wish it was a lot quieter, I have a lot of trouble understanding people in it with these hearing aids.
My tractor is a Farmall m, and the one we restored is a Farmall cub. We run the Farmall m in the Fourth of July parade, with me driving. Well except for the last two years that is.
My favorite sport is tractor Pulling. That's such an epic sport for Blind people. It's taylor made for us. Only one thing happening at a time, and just about everything that happens is pretty obvious and announcers naturally keep you up to speed usually, and it's very easy for someone sitting with you to describe what ever else is missing.
My Farmall m was actually modified by the guy I bought it from for competition pulling, but we've never done that with mine yet. I would just have dad or one of my brothers run it if we ever did it.
blind_cowboy1 points1y ago
I like the Ranger. I seem to run through batteries on it like nobody’s business. I end up replacing them about once a year. That is slightly annoying! It’s a 2013 and I’ve had it for nine years now.
The Ranger does not have a hydrostat transmission. It has, like most ATVs, what amounts to a CVT transmission. It does OK.
sicklixix [OP]1 points1y ago
What do you hunt ?
blind_cowboy1 points1y ago
Dove and deer mostly.
BeforeSides3 points1y ago
Programming and working on various digital projects, audiobooks, martial arts like BJJ and wrestling, cooking, lock picking, and ham radio.
Adventurous-Bid-93413 points1y ago
My dad has been totally blind for about 45 years now, and he just loves doing things with his hands and his head. He can read and write in braille, he has his own auto shop when we were kids, he can rebuild transmissions (microchips changed things there), and now that he’s older, he loves those 3-d puzzles…he’s got like…all of them it seems. Let’s see…he loves reading, every time I go over there a new slew of boxes in the doorway with braille magazines and new books…basically, his interests that I think we’re always there (working with his hands), just made their way into his daily life. He also enjoys what appears to be asking his Google home inappropriate questions?
valiant80861 points1y ago
Yes yes, ask it to pull your finger! The google home I mean.
graveyrdbabyy3 points1y ago
Crochet!! It's the easiest do when my eyes need a break. And the texture is a rlly nice stimulus
River-Song-19863 points1y ago
I read, listen to music, watch movies, cook, play with my puppy, go hiking and play dungeons and dragons.
RunsOnBoltCoffee3 points1y ago
Musician(bass, double bass, guitar, vocals), going to live shows, hiking and audiobooks are my main ones.
Ir0nhide812 points1y ago
My wife and I got a new Sony television with the new Google operating system. It has many accessibility features for those either part of site or hard of hearing ( x90j ). So I've been fortunate to enjoy television and shows more often now with the bigger screen and more accessibility options.
I had retinopathy in both eyes but lost 80% of my vision in my right and 50% of my left. So I can still see a little but the 4K quality with the bonuses accessibility functions help.
I go to church frequently and my wife teaches in church and I help her most of the time. It's pretty fun.
I still try and play video games when I can on my computer. Mostly video games with large cartoony graphics and FPS games where there aren't a lot of snipers in the distance because I can't see them.
Eriona892 points1y ago
I play RPG games on a game console 1,20 meter distance from a 50 inch TV. Although I can't play all the games due to lack of contrast.
sicklixix [OP]1 points1y ago
What are some of your favorite games?
Eriona891 points1y ago
The last of us 2, The Wicher 3, Dragon age inquisition, Assassin's creed and Tomb Raider
DrillInstructorJan2 points1y ago
Running in order to stay in shape, cooking in order to get out of shape!
Terry_Pie2 points1y ago
Audiobooks; boardgames; model railroading; tabletop RPGs; writing.
impablomations2 points1y ago
writing/listening to music, gaming, cooking. Recently taken up bonsai
CosmicBunny972 points1y ago
Listening to audiobooks and podcasts, playing D&D, sometimes writing stories, occasionally cooking, watching stuff with my bf (YouTube or, at the moment, Star Wars Rebels)
Helenstoybox1 points1y ago
I enjoy cooking, reading, all things parrot related, I have two lovely parrots and I look after them, train them and play with them as well as listen to YouTube about how to work with them, though just about all of the YouTubers assume that you can see. I hang out on things like Clubhouse and Discord with various groups of friends and I am also a Tupperware lady, though I'm not one of the ones that tries to push it on people or say I'm catching up with friends but only talk about Tupperware. That's not me. I have also studied reflexology and it is very handy to have a skill that I can use to give birthday and Christmas presents to people when I am short of cash. Knitting and playing music as well as singing are also hobbies of mine. Scarves and hats made out of feather wool or similar also make very cheap Christmas and birthday presents.
TechnicalPragmatist1 points1y ago
I did for a while a lot of self development stuff and introspective type of thing and reading, you could say self/help or theoretical psychology. Most of us call it typology. Was a type nerd for a bit. If curious I am estj 1w2 so/sp 162 that’s the basic stuff socionics I am lse dc te I think I am choleric melancholic cd on disc, learner, command, analytical, responsibility, and significance on clifton strengths. You get the idea. Haha! I studied a lot of the system not merely taken tests. I know the ins and outs to a lot of these not so much disc or temperment and mainly ennea socionics and mbti or western jung.
I enjoy worshiping God listening to sermons and gospel music and analyzing those lyrics.
I enjoy talking and studying appologetics, theology, and eschatology.
I do like learning and studying in general, I like talking and learning about politics and history.
I collect books. I have a great number of ebooks most of them nonfiction. I do have a sizable typology collection. I also have a good bit of history and political content. Some economics and philosophy. A good amount of psychology. And the list goes on. I have over 600 ebooks in my library if not more like 700.
I enjoy tinkering with technology audio or otherwise. I have built myself a bit of a computer lab here. I am also studying for a compsci degree though. I have an ipad, a surface pro, a chromebook, a windows hp laptop, a mac which is my main computer, a phone obviously, two apple watches, an echo studio, a google nest home thing, a big homepod that they don’t sell anymore, lots of wires and accessories. A few speakers and a drawerful of mics, and preamps. And studio equipment.
I liked and ran a youtube channel had a few versions where I did some typology stuff on it and typed people. Self development type thing and strengths and weaknesses.
I like food hunting or yelping and trying out different foods, and reviewing it and enjoy going places. Exploring my city, and I know it well.
I like traveling and getting around and if I had more money I’d do the actual traveling type stuff.
Volunteerism is fun. I enjoy helping people, mentoring, helping out in the community mostly in tech, advising advocating, and such. Helping people online answering tech questions.
Sometimes fitness and playing with my apple watch type of thing.
I enjoy knowing music analyzing the lyrics and such.
Evangelism. I enjoy going out there and spreading the good news of Jesus Christ. Go out there with some music, a speaker and just have some fun.
ceezspeaks1 points1y ago
Lost my ability to play FPS games so I play fighting games now.
valiant80861 points1y ago
Lol I love this thread! justsaying.
Wolfocorn201 points1y ago
Reading loads of audiobooks and watching quite a few movies and series preferably with audio discription, playing videogames and dnd, walking with my guide dog, plaing torball and showdown, going on crazy adventures and making whatever i can come up with
RedbullLady1 points1y ago
Podcasts, so many fucking podcasts lol
Audio books,
Watching TV and the news,
Spending time on my beautiful balcony
Cooking,
Music/singing
Online shopping or going to the mall sometimes.
Going out to eat, travel, chill at a bar, sitting by the water with a bottle of wine.
sicklixix [OP]1 points1y ago
Sounds relaxing. Do you use any special tools for cooking ?
RedbullLady1 points1y ago
No I actually don’t, I just memorize how stuff works in my head or use the little vision I have
sicklixix [OP]1 points1y ago
If you don't mind me asking , have you always been blind/VI ?
RedbullLady1 points1y ago
Yes, since the day I was born
I have less than 5% of my vision by the way
Seedy-Threepio1 points1y ago
