I'm legally blind and do not drive, however I was told I am able to witj binoculars and training. I'm 26 and kind of considering trying. I was also told the government or someone agency would pay for the glasses and training. Has anyone on here gone through this? Any advice? ❤

That’s really awesome! I still have a license but I can only safely drive when it’s completely cloudy during the day because of glare-and it still makes me really nervous because I’m not always sure what I’m looking at. I thought seriously about getting a Tesla with the autopilot feature, but it’s so expensive.

My legally blind friend drove without a license for around 35 years. I obviously don't recommend anybody do that.

Oh wow haha I won't

Smart choice. My buddy had quite a few accidents, but never hurt anybody thankfully.

he was stupid or what? he could be caught!

Never caught. He wrecked a car and fled on foot (solo accident), and laid down a motorcycle also abandoning it. And he was very intelligent.

In my state, to get a driver's license requires vision be no worse than 20/60. My eyesight is better than 20/40 so I can got my driver's license renewed however my field of vision is less than 20 degrees so I am legally blind. I drive.

My son isn’t legally blind, but his dr says he can get approved to drive with a biopic. His glasses were $1300. Insurance didn’t pay for them or the therapy he needed to learn to use them. He’s struggling to get used to them. I’m not sure he’ll ever feel comfortable driving or if it’s safe. Good luck to you.

Thank you for your comment. They quoted mine around $1000, I don't think i will ever do that due to my fear of not getting used to them. It seems like such a hassle. Good luck to him 💕

I know there are people with my condition who have learned to drive with bioptics, but I don’t know if they’re legally blind, or have a stronger acuity than me. I’ve never considered it for myself because I just can’t imagine a scenario where I’d be safe doing so. I don’t trust myself to ride a bicycle on a sunny day, let alone get behind the wheel of a car.
I have occasionally taken a spin around an empty parking lot with a friend’s car, and sighted supervision, which is fun. But for the most part, I can’t even remember which pedal is the gas and which is the brake, so I should definitely not be left to my own devices behind the wheel.

Thank you for your comment, and that's how i feel. Even the thought of using those makes me not feel safe enough to drive.

I still drive, very very carefully and with doubling up dark sunglasses and 2 visor light filtering screens. Even then I won’t drive in overly bright conditions or if I am having a very bad eye day. I have been told I shouldn’t but honestly I think my way is at least safer than people who text and drive. I am always very alert and careful, even if I can’t clearly see a lot (I can’t read street signs so I can also only drive places if my audio GPS will take me there or if I have the route memorized/have a sighted passenger to give me instructions). I am trying to rely on it less but you know, we do what we have to to get by.

that is really neat! What is your visual acuity if you don’t mind me asking? Do you have full peripheral vision or visual field deficits?
