Help me help myself (self.Blind)
submitted by jarvispresley
I was wondering if any of you have any tips on filing taxes, and if my blindness can help me get a larger refund.
Every year i search and search. All i am aware of is the line 39a deduction.
I appreciate any and all info. Take care.

New to this community, but have been blind since birth. As for help filing, I've found TurboTax and $1 the most accessible with screen readers. As for getting a larger refund, not really...Just the regular deduction for blindness which is, I believe, up to $1100 this year. It was at $1000 forever. Most of the web-based tax filing products work well with JAWS...Not sure about NVDA, Voiceover, or other screen readers. Good luck!

I am not a tax preparer but a VI small business owner. I too was looking for this deduction, upon contacting the IRS I found out that there are no special deductions for blind or VI taxpayers.

They suggested that I itemize and deduct all my work expenses such as

Travel(bus,Uber or paying for gas)

Out of picket accommodations for work
(Batteries cane tips ect)

Now if you do not work you may beagle to deduct travel expenses to medical visits and such

Some service agencies will assist you in filling your taxes for free as well (depends on state)

I hope this helps and good luck
