Art for an Impaired Friend (self.Blind)
submitted by theatrenerd13
My best friend only has use of one eye, and has recently shared with my that his love of art and fancy things stems from a sense of normalcy in being able to see all the details. I was wondering if anyone here had good recommendations of art pieces, styles, or anything really that would be enjoyable to someone without depth perception? I really appreciate him sharing this information with me and I want to show that I care and am really listening. Thank you :)

$1 a link to a video of type of art that works best with monocular vision.

I was so impressed I've tried taking it up as a hobby. Failed miserably, but still in awe of the work in the link.

My friends love to hear what I see in abstract paintings.
After I tell them, they tell me what is really there. Interesting for all of us. I have 5% vision in one eye only, the other doesn't work.

I was blind in one eye for a four year so I have some insight.

Can you clarify what you mean by all the details?? Unless there’s something wrong with his good eye he still seeing all the details. The only time he would need his second eyes if he need some sort of 3-D glasses to see a piece of art which is very very very very rare in itself. He is not missing out on anything he can definitely go to a museum and enjoy a statue in all it’s glory or a dinosaur or any thing really.

Let me try to approach this in a different manner. Do you have a sculpture or a piece of art in your house or maybe if you don’t have that a tree or a nice looking bush somewhere outside your house that you can go look at some thing eccentric in 3-D? Now that you have this beautiful object in front of you go ahead and close one eye and start looking at it. Now tell me do you miss details or have a real lack of perception now that you have one eye closed?? No not really you can still enjoy all the beauty the world has to give you without sacrificing much of anything.

I’m not trying to be rude or anything here but I’ve been to the art museum my local art museum and never once did the idea that I need both eyes to see and enjoy a piece of art never did that cross my mind. The only time my death perception really came into play was when somebody would toss something small it to me or when I had to pour something quickly or if I needed to park in an extra tight space then it would throw me off a little bit.

I mostly was just trying to make sure I wasn’t overlooking the way he might see things compared to the way I would! I’m very new to all this so I’m still learning, thanks for your explanation!

Art is very personal to both the makers and the viewer. Might I suggest and visit to a gallery or art museum. Observation of your friend will give you your needed insight. If that is not possible then perhaps a book of the history of Art with large color pictures that you can enjoy together. Good on you for wanting to help someone expand there world!
