Damn, I just crossed the street and a car clipped past me round the corner on my worse eye, and when my cane hit it the tip snapped off in its wheel well (I think?). I've been getting in the habit of yelling "oh no, I hope nobody kills me!" as I cross the street, thought it wouldn't be necessary on such a short crossing but whatever! I just replaced this thing and hate feeling vindicated every time I panic that someone is going to run me down !

Horrible I would post what happened in your town news or website and explain how bloody expensive they are.
PrincessDie1239 points1y ago
And that canes aren’t covered by insurance because they aren’t considered durable medical equipment and thus aren’t able to be supplied by durable medical equipment suppliers
jofish222 points1y ago
Wait really?
TechnicalPragmatist1 points1y ago
Yes insurance doesn’t cover it and most of us just has to buy our own out of pocket.
Rethunker6 points1y ago
Yikes! Sorry that happened to you.
All the assistive tech in the world can’t prevent drivers from being careless, unfortunately. And I write that having spent more than a few minutes wondering what kind of assistive tech could actually work robustly, always, at a reasonable price. And yet the most robust, durable, and cheapest solution would be non-terrible drivers.

You handshake me Yelling loudly at crosswalks I have a big issue with college students blowing pass stop signs and red lights
TechnicalPragmatist1 points1y ago
Yeah. It’s true even a sighted guy I know almost got hit and it was right outside a college campus there’s a crosswalk in the middle of the road and even if there was a red light they flew threw it when the guy was crossing. But it didn’t hit him. They went down a few hundred yards then realized what they did. I almost got hit and stuff this car flew by just right behind me centimeters away, just right by my back outside a campus once.

cane tips are cheap. Better your cane than you.
redmarus [OP]10 points1y ago
Imagine practicing gratitude every time some maniac reminds you that your life is worth absolutely nothing to people who have the power to obliterate you on a whim. I'd go crazy.
BenandGracie6 points1y ago
I have had people almost clip me before. If you think too much on it, you will never leave your house.
TechnicalPragmatist1 points1y ago
This is very true. I praise the lord when I have had close calls.
TechnicalPragmatist1 points1y ago
Glad you are safe and well and not hurt. Yeah, it can be pretty dangerous out there. I am totally blind and at an intersection had two almosts. They were not that bad. I had something like this but the car went past me and almost hit me but was behind me. A friend at the time was like do you realize how close they came? It was bad. The other two times this car was going not to fast and just hit my cane. It didn’t brake praise God, the other time the car started to go and it hit my cane then it stopped. So yeah. Sometimes it’s crazy out there.

Have you had orientation and mobility training? You should not be yelling before crossing the street. You need to be listening.
redmarus [OP]0 points1y ago
I know how to cross a street, thank you. I am in the habit of yelling less so drivers listen (would they even hear me from their death chariots?) and more to attract the attention of passersby in case a driver actively runs me down even when I have full right of way (vehicular manslaughter rates have been rising consistently in my city over the past several years).
Individual-Fan16392 points1y ago
If you are yelling to attract other pedestrians, then that is even worse. You clearly are not focusing enough on your crossing. Instead of spending that two or three seconds yelling, you seriously need to be listening for a car engine. Closing your mouth to listen for subtle clues like that could be the difference between losing your cane tip and losing your life
TechnicalPragmatist2 points1y ago
Yeah, the yelling thing is realy odd.
redmarus [OP]1 points1y ago
Oh ok, I'll be sure to practice more individual responsibility when it comes to crossing the street when I have the light and hoping people don't kill me.
Individual-Fan16392 points1y ago
I sense sarcasm, but I hope you do exactly that. Yelling to the sky before crossing is helping nobody, most importantly yourself. I suggest you get OnM training if your vision is deteriorating.
