Braille books (self.Blind)
submitted by CuriousDrink4135
Hi all! My husband is visually impaired and now we have a toddler (no signs of impairment). My husband primarily uses audio for reading so we haven’t had much need for Braille books. What are the best places to get Braille children’s books? We like buying used if there are any places we can do that, otherwise new is fine! Thank you in advance for any help!

Also see if you can connect with a family with a blind child. If they are anything like me, we have a ton of Braille kids books that my daughter has outgrown.

Thank you!

Also, if your husband has a brailler he can make his own especially with board books. Just use large transparent address labels and his can stick them on the page.

Thank you for the idea!

My dad has always been blind (well since I was like 1?) lol but I still had a blast learning how to use the braille writer

If you're in the US the various State braille and talking book libraries have those, both in straight braille and in print braille. I am currently working on reading "Green Eggs and Ham" in print braille as both practice for myself and cause I have an infant.

Thank you! I’m nervous to borrow from a library because my son is 18 months and he loves hard on his books… especially when he’s drooly! I’ll look into that when he’s older though! Thanks!

There is also National Braille Press, I do not have the link for them but they have a lot of options I have heard. My daughter is 8mo so is not really holding the books yet though she tries to eat the board books that we have.

We definitely have our fair share of “sampled” books 😅

Yeah, these are just books that we bought, my better half is sighted so most of our books are print only.

Www.braillebookstore.com has lots!

I think that website isn’t ethical. I think the business likes to steal people’s cards and information I’ve heard them doing that to a few people.

Thank you!

I think that website is dodgey though just not reputable and steals.

Thanks for the heads up!

Not a problem.
likeadollseyes 1 points 1y ago
No problem! Also- if you have a Perkins Brailler and some label paper you can turn any kids book into a Braille book 😀
CuriousDrink4135 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
This is true! I’ve been trying to think of how I could do that! Thanks for the idea!

American Printing House for the Blind (APH) has some I believe in their online shop.

Alternatively, since Braille books are often quite pricey, I recommend checking out $1. There should be info on APH's site. It is a partner program of the Imagination Library created by Dolly Parton that provides free books to children up until they are 6 years old. Braille Tales provides the Braille versions.

Generally, they are the print versions with Braille stickers added to the pages so that if the child or parent is sighted they can still follow along or read the books.

Cool! I will absolutely check that out!

In the UK, there's the Clearvision Project- a lending library of children's books specially adapted-

"Most ClearVision books are regular children’s books. The brailled text is on clear plastic sheets, interleaved with the print pages. The text and pictures are visible through the brailled sheets. Wherever possible we make sure that the braille reader's hands will not cover the print text so that the books can be read by print and braille readers simultaneously."

We used these so my son's dad could read to (sighted) son and they both really enjoyed it. I hope you find something similar where you live.

There's also a guide to making your own tactile books, which your husband and child could enjoy together? $1
