Embarrassingly stupid question. Navigating gyms without getting in the way of people’s workouts and without annoying the hell out of staff when I want to switch machines………………. How I do dat??????

You could also ask a staff member and cue them when you need to move to a different machine. I’ve done this many times. People were very helpful.
If you don’t have enough vision to see if someone is at a machine when navigating independently as I have done, I’ll ask aloud if anyone is working out on the machine to make sure there is no one there.
As for cane work and moving about, go slow and do an upper body cross protection with your arm to prevent smacking face first into machines. Also move slowly and sweep your cane properly. It’s definitely a place for constant contact. It’s still not perfect, but it makes a huge difference.

Can you describe this upper body cross protection technique you mentioned in a bit more detail? Thanks!
UnsightlyOpinions2 points1y ago
Essentially you reach your arm straight out in front of you, bend at the elbow so your forearm and hand are pointing toward the sky and cross it toward the opposite side of your body in front of you.

Oh OK, a.k.a. the thing I generally do when I know I’m walking down a sidewalk with low hanging branches. Lol. I guess I kind of do that intuitively. Makes sense in a gym where there are likely to be all kinds of painful metal objects sticking out at various heights

Bring a buddy with you

Get to know your staff. Listen to their voices. Find out which are accommodating and pleasant. If you want to limit how much staff members you use you could use some of the universal/pully type weights more often. Then you could likely do back and arms or biceps/triceps on the same machine, etc. Just be safe though, there is a lot of motion going on in a gym.

That’s a good question. I think it’s fine to ask it.
I would say I just do still ask people are usually glad to help and the staff is usually happy to help and acomodate.

I think thats a perfectly normal question...i have diffivulties in gyms. My sollution was to find a gym where they would be understanding of this situation and will help out. I would recomend you do the same.

Most gyms have some regulars that are friendly. Have your cane displayed & often they will introduce themselves. When I visited a gym in AZ, several members came up to me offering assistance. I often try to walk slowly & stand near a station. If I notice someone around, I will ask. Otherwise I will just feel around. Most people will be cool about it if you happened to interrupt their workout.
