Remote jobs or Volunteer opportunities for the blind (self.Blind)
submitted by tcameron99
My friend is blind and would like to find a paid remote position OR a volunteer opportunity that he can do to keep busy and feel needed. He's a retired psychologist who wants to keep busy, but no longer in the field of psychology. I've thought of web user experience tester for the blind but not sure where to look for a paid or even unpaid position like that. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Would they be interested in running an online peer to peer support group for parents of vi children or one for vi people themselves? Look uk also run a mentoring program, fighting blindness in Ireland do "insight counselling"

I suggested mentoring / counseling, but he seems hesitant to be in the field he's trained in. I THINK he is looking for a diversion... something new/different he can enjoy without being very stressful. All ideas are good, though. IMO.

What does he want? What is he interested in?

Please don’t let your primary criteria be “blind friendly” if that isn’t what this person is looking for. Many, many things can be adapted and made accessible, why not start with someone’s personal interest and abilities?

This!

If he’s interested in remaining in the area of psychology, I know various help/crisis phone/chat services are always looking for volunteers. That sort of thing can easily be made accessible. Any kind of customer service or administrative work is also easily made accessible. But again, so can most things with a little bit of effort. I know blind people who are lawyers, social workers, music therapists, labourers, customer support, IT, entrepreneurs, &c. “Blind friendly” should not be the sole criterion for the job.

Thank you. I apologize if I've mis-spoken. I just wanted to include the vision issue to help describe what MIGHT be out of scope, although I understand there's adaptations that can be made to make most things work. I appreciate all the suggestions and will share with him.

I mean, as long as he’s not going for long-haul trucker, or brain surgeon more things can be adapted than most sighted people realize. I’m not offended or anything, just want people to remember that blind-friendly isn’t the only criterion for a job, and there are actually a lot of career options out there.

He's fearless as far as what he'll try. When I asked him what his dream job would be he said Uber driver! I really want to help, but he's struggling with depression as well. I'm trying to be a supportive friend and hopefully help him out of his rut.

If his hearing is good and he can type fast, he could look into script interpreting / life captions, not sure what the exact term is but basically transcribing spoken language for deaf people in real time.

I thought that was a good suggestion when I made it, but his typing isn't the best. Thanks though!

I also thought he would be an excellent User Experience Tester. He has me come over to help him when he's "stuck" on a site that has prompts that are "hidden" to non-sighted visitors but he didn't seem interested in that, either.

As a former web designer, his input would be very helpful.

This question is too wide opened. Ther’es a lot of variables here we don’t have answers to.

I've shared what I know... he's a great guy and I'm hoping to bring ideas to him to at least keep his spirits up and mind open.
