Need advice for a friend who recently became blind (self.Blind)
submitted by Levitb2
A friend of mine suddenly went blind. He is a diabetic also. Looking for the best (not too expensive) medical alert device for him. Suggestions appreciated.

Also, any suggestions to get him help with other devices and/or organizations would be great. He is not a vet and from what I understand he is not eligible for free transportation to doctors, etc. since we are too far from a city .

Thanks.

You're a true friend. I'll bet you are also a good listener when your friend needs to talk.

I find it really hard to find those. They’re the ones you wanna hold onto.

Also the lighthouse may be helpful. Also just saving up for such things would be good. What type of diabettic tracking system does he have. The thing with insurance is they don’t like to cover the talking stuff but the cgm systems they do cover may already be accessible. But that’s tricky.
Learning how to be blind like going to a blind training center or having someone come to his house to show him may be useful.

He has some type of talking device for his diabetes.

I think he should go to the Lighthouse to learn things since apparently they are too shortstaffed to send someone to his house. He doesn't live close to the Lighthouse. At this time he cannot navigate to an Uber and back to house without assistance, plus the Uber rides are expensive.

That’s good that he does have that.

Also yes they are quite expensive.

Well this wouldn’t be the lighthouse. It’s expensive maybe the state can help pay but you could go to this training center to get trained to be independent.

There are a few forums of them. Some states have their own which I heard isn’t as good.

Theres one in california called Hatland? I don’t know if it is still ran by the organization. They have changed a lot even their name. And then there’s the ones that the national federation for the blind holds they are pretty good but you have to go with their philosophy.

Are you in the US? Most states offer programs for rehabilitation, OT, and job training if needed.

Not all services are free, but many are offered on a sliding scale.

Your friend will benefit from technology training on his computer and phone.

He should get his doctor to provide himwith a legal certificate of legal blindness, which will entitle him to greater social security benefits.

Most important, he needs you to continue to be a good friend, and a safe place to vent. If he has a group of family and friends, it's time to circle the wagons of support.

Orientation and Mobility classrooms and other stuff related to rehabilitation. After that, a NoJab cane with a ball roller would be an AWESOME gift, but they are kinda expensive tbh.
