Reddit desktop site annoyance -- focus jumps to top of page whenever I write a comment or reply (self.Blind)
submitted by synthpopolis
Windows 10 with NVDA and Chrome here. Whenever I comment or reply in a Reddit thread, I completely lose my place in the thread and it's super annoying. Anyone else running into this and is there a solution? Example: I might be four pages down into the comments, reply to someone, hit Post and then NVDA focus has returned to the top of the page, requiring I go on a wild goose chase to find my way back to where I was.

Edit: many folks have mentioned the Reddit for Blind windows app but shouldn’t we be able to use the desktop site? If not, that’s a pretty big problem and one that we obviously need to put some pressure on Reddit to improve. I really don’t want to have to install another app if I can avoid it

Redditfortheblind is your answer :)

It’s lightweight and really easy to use. You basically just use the up and down arrows to navigate and enter to go to the next menu and you can also edit your posts with F2. Read the read me, I’m sure you’re gonna enjoy it.

It’s a bit full of features I do wish you could hide but overall it’s a really good client.

There’s also one fromnathantech.net called Luna for Reddit but I prefer the first one.

Oh, A tip for the first client. You’re Probably gonna wanna change the sounds, if you do, go to free sounds.org and sign up, type in something like click, find the wav link and look for one there. Where do you find the sound you like, click on the link with the name of the sound on it then find the download link.

Once the sound is downloaded, rename it to the same sound in the sounds folder, with the wav extension, and paste in there either replacing the file or deleting the other file, and you’re good to go.

Cool. I had heard of that but thought somebody said it wasn’t quite finished yet or didn’t let you do everything? Maybe it has improved since then. Thanks

It has, the only thing you can’t do is chat. If you wanna chat, I recommend dystopia but it’s still in beta.

Even if you can’t quite do everything… You can clearly do more than you’re managing on the web.

Oh definitely.

Yes I like that about dystopia I actually put in the suggestion and the feature for chat myself no reddit clients do that but dystopia and I thought it should be able to and the deve for dystopia was able to put it in *sigh* he use to be more responsive would be cool if it or other clients can do more mod features or access the mod accept pages and such.

It would.

In truth the reddit website is interesting and kind of accessible but kind of not it’s very clunky to navigate I find the chat feature to be tolerable but other then that it could do with improvement. Maybe we can talk to the reddit team but not sure how much they actually care about accessibility. Honestly.the best best experience I have had and consistently do use is dystopia so yeah.

Actually, I don’t have the issue with focus. Make sure your resolution is correct, make sure your window is maximized. And overall make sure you’re using most of the site in focus mode.
synthpopolis [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Why would screen resolution and the state of the window matter to NVDA? Also, can you clarify what you mean by focus mode? Thanks for the reply

I’ve seen Stranger Things in my days of using computers. Focus mode is similar to forms mode and other screen readers, in that, you can use Shortcuts that the website has. You can also turn off the quick NAV keys and Nvda as well. If you want more information, consult Nvda‘s read me on focus mode versus browse mode, also memorize those keystrokes. Good luck.
