Hobbies! (self.Blind)
submitted by CosmicBunny97
This is part vent, part question, and part getting to know you. I know that this has been asked before, but I'd also like suggestions.

I really want some new hobbies. I'm blind and realising gaming (audio or, in the past, video) was never my thing.I just don't have the patience or the mental energy. I like the idea of MUDs but don't find them immersive.

Aside from uni, my hobbies are: Writing stories, reading (audiobooks normally), listening to podcasts, occasionally cooking. I play D&D over Discord once a week with my bf and his friends. I volunteer when I get the chance (admin stuff, because I need the work experience). I plan to get back into working out (I see an exercise physio once a week) and tandem cycling now that I've recovered from some surgery.

But as you can tell, I rely heavily on technology and sometimes, I just don't feel like being on the computer or phone. I've considered taking up knitting, sewing, something along those lines, but I get really confused with instructions and wouldn't have a clue what to make. I've never been a crafty person... It is still something to consider.

So, I apologise for my rambling. What are your hobbies? Do you have any suggestions for me?

Thanks guys.

Something you might consider doing it crocheting. I’m VI and still have useable vision, but I think it’s totally possible to do well completely blind. It’s more tactile than people think. You might have to have someone show you how to hold the yarn and hook at first, but once you get it, it’s super easy. There’s plenty of patterns out there for whatever you want to make, but if you don’t have anything you want, you can learn how to make baby blankets or hats or something and donate them to homeless shelters

I’ll second crochet. I used to do it in the dark at bedtime while my spouse watched tv even before my vision went. If you’re just doing a blanket or something without very complicated patterns, it’s very relaxing and a few times I fell asleep while working on it. I’d wake up with the hook in one hand and the yarn wrapped around the other.

Yeah hobbies are hard for us all at times it seems, lots of stuff that others can do that we for the most part cannot. I play piano, watch TV, read, hang out here and on discord, play magic the gathering though the pandemic has prevented me from trying since going blind, also cook, play braille scrabble, and have an infant (that's a hobby right?).

my primary hobby is recreational (legal!) drug use, I do a lot of animal care for my own personal pet & as a part time job around my neighborhood, I talk to people on Grindr (I've made some friends in my area through it), I listen to a ton of music......honestly hobbies are hard, I feel your pain especially as someone with very bad dyspraxia, sob.

My hobbies include YouTube, gaming sometimes, Reddit, and I’m thinking of looking into helping homeless people in a cafe from a website called crises.

For muds you can try alter Ion, I’m not a huge mud person but the sound pack is good.

Shortwave Radio listening to far away radio stations.

Amateur Radio which is listening and talking to people via voice or morse code.

For shortwave listening, you need a radio that has voice announcement and a long wire antenna.

I code, but besides that I'm yet to find something to do. I also used to play an old space-themed web game called The Violet Sector for which I was asked to make an iOS app, but unfortunately the game hasn't been running since May 2021, and since the last time I talked to the administrators they were overhauling the code, I ended up having to pause development on my side as I have nothing to test the app against.

I've also been thinking about finding a job, not because I need the money but because I need an occupation, a sense of purpose, and want to meet new people, however in order to trust my own skills, and to prove to any potential employers that I'm worth hiring, I'm building a portfolio of things developed without any sight. One of these things will be my own implementation of the aforementioned web game complete with the requested iOS app, which I will propose to its administrators if I happen to finish it before they're done whatever they've been working on for the last year.

I did start a $1 a couple of days ago and got some suggestions, but unfortunately I did not like any of them, and am beginning to think that my problem is being a person of very narrow interests. I'm also entertaining the idea of finding a psychologist to talk a bit about my problems in hopes that they can help me overcome my frustrations so that I can enjoy life again.

I got really really deep in to self-introspection self development type work. Theoretical psychology. I’ve researched them read the books been to a few free events and the free stuff on self development. I got in to the mbti, enneagram, socionics, and stuff like that and have extensively studied them. I know my types and what they mean. If you’re curious I am an estj te 1w2 so/sp 162. A lot of blind people seem to be deadly afraid of self -introspection and self development though. They seem to be really resistant to learning or reading about it. Hahaha! It’s almost amusing. It’s not even it’s boring no thanks. It’s like this I feel so uncomfortable looking in to myself it’s entertaining. I’ve done hours and hours of it.

Also meditating or praying or some such thing. You learn a lot I am not kidding about yourself. that’s how I got this name on here or in some places I call myself the pragmatic reformer I also got that from enneagram and mbti.

Besides this I enjoy listening to sermons and talking about appologetics, theology, and eschatology. Me and this other totally blind friend of mine have been listening to a pastor and then discussing biblical things lately. Mostly eschatology based.

I enjoy social media and discussing stuff like this with people anyway.

Besides this I like discussing politics or history with people and other topics like that. I do a lot of learning, reading, studying, stuff like this. Pretty nerdy and person who keeps learning.

Besides all this I like tinkering with tech. I have a small computer lab here and a small but somewhat of a studio here. I have 5 computers and tablets combined. A mac, a hp windows device, a chromebook, a microsoft surface, and an ipad. Let’s not forget my iphone, all three smart devices, I have a echo studio, a big homepod they discontinued a long time ago, and a google nest, I have 2 apple watches, lots of wires and 3 hard drives. I have a bunch of speakers and mics I had some that works with the iphones or that use to work with the iphones. I have a few studio quality mics that are desktop mics. I recently acquired a old shure headset I need to try out. So I tinker with all of these and play with my tech toys.

I also like traveling around my city, if I had more money travel in general and exploring new cities.

I like food hunting and yelping too. I like trying new foods and new dishes. I did a lot of yelping at one point.

I enjoy learning how to code don’t code yet but yeah.

Posting and replying on social media is interesting and networking with people online and offline is fun for sure.

When I was doing the self-development stuff I ran my own youtube channel or podcast. It was actually pretty fun and I would interview people put together content.it was a pretty specific topic too of typology at the time. But find a topic and do a podcast or stream or page or youtube channel on it.

I enjoy volunteering. That was fun and you get to help and if the volunteering includes people you get to meet and talk with people. I did some mentoring, lots of advocating, educating people, and teaching or helping out with tech and technical issues. As a teenager, my hobby was being the It guy for a big group of blind people. That was years ago but yeah.

Maybe some of those you’d like to do too?

Also what about learning a language?
