How do you feel about "blind" labeled vests for blind runners?(self.Blind)
submitted by Sensitive_Show_5841
I've seen a couple websites that sell reflective vests with the words "BLIND" and "GUIDE" and while I understand that these types of vests are required for marathons and competitions, I am curious to know if you think are they also necessary or recommended for regular workouts/training?

My partner is blind, and we bought a set when running together, we found without them other people would try and run through the middle of us which they couldn't as we used a guide strap between us or expect him to get out the way (often running straight into him). Yes they are a bit obnoxious but unfortunately necessary when running round a built up area.

Did you find you or your partner were treated differently when you used them? Felt singled out or maybe more welcomed?

Don't think so, we are left alone for the most part. We get looks all the time but that's no different to when we are out with a guide dog or his cane. People stair regardless. I think if he was on his own people would be more willing to help with his high vis bib on.

I'd wear one during a race. When you run with people who have no idea how to run in a group it might just be enough warning to have people stay away from you. If you run with a guide and use a tether to keep you together it might keep people from running in between you.
I don't think I'd wear them for a regular run. But it might make some people more comfortable so if they wanted to wear one they should.

I don’t run, but I do a lot of Nordic walking and I always wear a neon yellow reflective “blind”-vest. I feel much safer on the road and in the forest as I can’t use my cane but still show people that I’m blind.
But I believe that wearing a “blind”-vest should be every person’s own choice and no one should be shamed for wearing or not wearing a vest.
I’d like to share a funny story with you! My fully sighted brother was about to go somewhere with his moped in the dark. Our mom told him to put on a reflective vest so that he would be more visible on the road. He grabbed the closest vest, which happened to be my “Blind”-vest. Luckily, our mom could stop him before he left the house… Just imagine people’s reaction if they saw a supposedly blind person driving a moped on a country road in the dark!🤣

Ugh no. Just. No. Besides, even if I did consent to wear/use them, they still wouldn't do a lick of good bc sighted people still wouldn't pay attention to them.

I have a simmular one. Doesn't have the word blind on it but the logo of a person with cane and dog instade. I use it for all sorts of events from running to just walking. For some reason the sighted folks understand it better when i walk around with that sign printed on my back than if i just whent out with my guide dog. I'd say just use em if you want and don't if you don't want to

No thanks. I also don't think they should be required for organised events, honestly.

I run, I didn't even know this existed and I love the idea.

No thanks I don’t want to advertise loudly that I am blind thanks.

Ew, no. Who'd want that?

Those of us who prefer to give others a heads up to please not run between us and our guide runners :)

Make sure the loop is big and bold and fluorescent orange.
And run with someone who is imposing. My running partner Katie (thanks, Katie!) apparently has a very forbidding stare at the wrong moment.
Also she drags me along at the speed of sound and it is terrifying but that's another issue.
