Making a Case for Self-Description: It’s Not About Eye Candy(disabilityvisibilityproject.com)

I’d rather people spend the time describing the freaking PowerPoint slides than what they themselves look like

Yeah, this is kind of BS. The only time self description matters is when the attribute you're describing is relevant to whatever it is you're talking about, or if it's some core value/quality that you feel a strong need to express as part of your identity (though, even then, I think it's context dependent).
If that's the case, it's not limited to describing yourself for the blind community.
Like if you're talking about trans rights, it might be relevant to mention you're a trans man.
If you're talking about some program for poor people, it might matter to your audience if you grew up in a shack or a mansion.
If you've made socks for people with enormously large feet and you're a circus clown, mention that.
Otherwise, it doesn't matter.

I agree with the consensus here. I don’t think it’s useful or relevant. And is a distraction.
There was a person I was arguing with online who claims I should make it clear to everyone online I was blind. I said why? That’s not important and could have negative side effects. Some conversations doesn’t matter if I am blind. So what if I am blind or not? If it’s online it’s okay that they are ignorant that I am a blind person. They can think I am sighted. What does talking about religion or politics have anything to do with blindness? And besides I am not hiding it if it’s necessary I will say so. If the topic comes up and if it’s relevant or they find out somehow sure I’ll say something but otherwise? No. Not relevant.
It’s kind of like that.
I don’t need to know your race that you are black white red green purple orange or blue for the most part.
I don’t need to know many of your identity things.
I don’t need to know your sexual orientation.

I can honestly say I don't care about self description.
I'm from the UK and honestly this seams like a very US thing, people there like to try new things and try to move forward, that's great, it truly is, but sometimes, things like this happen and I just don't see the point.
IF i'm not thinking about whether I want to have sex with a woman or am going to ask her on a date that night, I don't care what the person looks like.
I honestly don't se how other blind people think this is a good idea. Let's say someone is completely blind for example; the other person let's them know in their meeting that they have blond hair and blue eyes, like me, what does that tell a person who knows nothing of colour?

It’s actually not just a US thing. Many organizations in the UK and Australia are doing this as well. Actually, the UK and Australia were the first to make this common. The US is just copying what they started.
