Just need a minute to vent (self.Blind)
submitted by Lyssa221201
I'm on a field biology trip for a college class, which has been extremely grueling and challenging, especially with my sight issues. I'm blind in one eye, have crap distance vision and lack peripheral vision. My lovely professors have been amazing about making sure I can navigate without breaking myself, for which I'm eternally grateful. The issue I'm having lies with another student in my project group. We are both very take charge people, but we think in very different directions. He likes big picture complicated things and I like smaller scale, simpler experiment designs. We had a meeting tonight to discuss our projects for tomorrow, as well as present our results from today's projects. We had to make a group PowerPoint and present it in front of the rest of our class. Well, he edited my slides without telling me and moved stuff around and put stuff that I was supposed to say on other slides and stuff other people were going to say on mine. He did this after we'd deemed the presentation ready.

It came time to present and my slides looked nothing like how I'd left them format wise. I couldn't see the text, so I had to apologize to the group several times while I struggled to read it on the screen without blocking the projector with my shadow. It was awful. I know that my class and professors understand, but I found it extremely embarrassing because it looked like I didn't know what I was talking about. I managed to hold myself together and work on tomorrow's project, but he kept suggesting we expand things beyond what I'm capable of doing even though I repeatedly examined that our professor had said absolutely not to things like that because it would be physically dangerous for me to do. (He wanted to measure trees on really steep hills between a stream and some uplands instead of on the flat stream edge and the flat upland area for who the heck knows what reason?) It literally took out TA stepping in and saying absolutely not for him to drop it.

I'm honestly just really upset, and tired and I needed a space where people would really understand. My class and professors can try, but they don't completely know what it's like. I've already sent my lead professor a message about it because I didn't want to come off as rude by calling this guy out in front of everyone. Thanks for letting me vent. I apologize if the formatting is a little odd. I'm on mobile.

He is way out of line. You have every right to be furious.

Oh ya i completely understand. I'm also in university, so i know how stressful those présentations can be, especially if the material you're presenting changes unexpectedly last minute. Also reading off projectors is generally hard, but doing it in the middle of a presentation when you don't know what you're presenting must've been awful. Hopefully they don't change your slides next time, and good luck with the rest of your project.

Thank you for your comment. It's an upper division course with only 11 of us that we had to apply to get into, so I was honestly a mess after I got back to my dorm. I talked to the girl I'm rooming with about it and she said that she and a few other girls had noticed that he was acting really odd around me and going out of his way to push my buttons. I'm not really sure why that is, because we are all adults and every interaction I've had with him in the past has been nothing but polite. I'm definitely going to bring it up to my professor tomorrow if she doesn't get back to me tonight because I feel like it won't go over well if I bring it up to him myself. I'm really hoping everything goes well too.

Put it back your way and explain it your way. This guy is a bully if not a sadist.

I'm planning on having a chat with him about it today. I don't want to go into it angry, which I still am, because he's probably going to dig in his heels even with me being reasonable, so angry is definitely not the way to go. I'm hoping to have my professor present because she's aware of the weird dynamic we have going on right now. I really wish I could do something on my own, but it's not feasible.

I'm so sorry.

I can't presume to judge but from where I'm standing, that's not on. Editing slides after the presentation was deemed ready by both of you and not telling you? Not fair. Even if this other person had said "sorry, I had to edit the slides but I'll help you "where needed" would've been better.

Wishing you the best of luck.

Honestly, I would've been probably more mad if he decided to 'help' me during my presentation because I'd have taken that as him stepping more on my toes than he already did.

Regardless I’d be furious vision issues or not I’d be able to read it fine with braille and screen readers but the person I am by principles yeah, I’d be really just very upset and angry. I would also save my own file and present it the way I had it. I love ultimate control people think I am a jerk because of that but because I have so much control people can’t easily do that to me anyway. And people would be too intimidated to do so.

Group projects suck sometimes. Had a case where one group member just would not show up to the agreed upon meetings for no reason. Later he would submit his drafts which were completely separate from our combined project which had tons of errors and looked like he spent 5 minutes on them.

On the day of the presentation me and the 2nd group member who actually worked together were ready to submit our presentation (we had to do group member 3's work ourselves after he wouldn't respond to us) and group member 3 came in late and told us sorry, but he did the work and handed us a separate paper to present that he did himself (just his part). Again, tons of errors and it didn't fit in the presentation at all.

The professor gave us a choice before presenting, either present the combined copy or try and present both. If we presented the combined copy group member 3's grade would be 0. Group member 3 was begging but we dropped him in the end. Got an A on our presentation. If we presented both our grade would have been a D+ at best.
