Android Keyboard for Low Vision (self.Blind)
submitted by benbrook78
Hello

I am a visually impaired software engineer and recently switched over to Android.

I was surprised to see that the screen magnifier does not magnify the on-screen keyboard, making it very difficult for me to type.

TalkBack is great and I can type with it turned on, but I was hoping for a larger keyboard that I would be able to use with my remaining vision.

I didn't really see anything I liked, so I wrote my own. I've cleaned it up a bit and published it on Google Play for anyone else who might find it useful.

It's called BroadBoard and is basically a huge keyboard screen that can be dragged around by touch to find the keys you want - a bit like zooming in on an image and panning around with your fingertip. I've added sizing options, common low vision color combinations, and different layouts for several languages.

It's not a commercial product. It's free, and there are no ads. It doesn't require any permissions except for vibration (which you can turn off if not wanted). It collects no data.

I don't think it will be useful for anyone who is completely blind or relies entirely on TalkBack. But I do intend to improve integration with TalkBack for anyone (like me) who sometimes prefers having a screen reader in combination with visual interaction.

I hope someone finds it as helpful as I have. I'm very open to feedback on how it can be improved or any new features that could be added. Also feel free to send me corrections of any of the language translation for non-English locales...I'm sure most of it is atrocious.

You can find it on Google Play here:

Is there anything like this for iOS? I don’t use Android. I depend on iPad for everything because they have features I need. A keyboard for visually impaired would be helpful

Not sure. It's certainly possible to create one.

I don't know if I'll ever get around to creating a version for iOS. But if I do, I'll let everyone know.

Thanks! I know some code, and I understand basics for building an iOS app, but I don’t have a computer or an Apple Developer account, so it’s not worth it to me to try coding it myself since I can’t actually publish it or upload it for testing.

Sounds interesting alternatively I’d consider using a bluetooth keyboard or learn to use accessible software like magnifiers or screen readers.
