Does the Showtime app seriously not have video descriptions? In 2022?? (self.Blind)
submitted by synthpopolis
My wife and I installed the Showtime app on our Apple TV so we could catch up on some original series and make use of the audio descriptions which were not available on the DVR versions we had recorded. Lo and behold, we searched high and low in the settings and couldn’t find any such option. I googled it and all I could find was a couple of visually impaired dudes sued Showtime for not, in fact, providing video descriptions. This can’t still be true?! I could find no follow up information on what happened with that lawsuit. Are we just not looking in the right place? We are both in shock that this would not be available from a modern streaming video provider in 2022.

Edit: $1 by the two Pennsylvania man filed in February 20 21. I couldn’t find much else about it but let me know if somebody else has more luck

Yeah most apps I have found do not have it. Like really just seems they do not even care to pretend to bother.

I’ve found Amazon prime, Apple TV, Xfinity (to some extent) and several others are really good, but yeah. Still very hit or miss

Have you checked out the lists of described titles at https://adp.acb.org?

A few Showtime series have AD through Amazon Prime while the functionality is being added to the Showtime app and more series are being described for it. You can find such series by using the "find" feature in your web browser on this page: https://adp.acb.org/amazonad.html

OK, that is helpful. Thank you! We are watching the series Super Pumped about the rise and fall of the former Uber CEO. It’s really good! Just wish audio descriptions were available

It's the same with Starz. It's very disappointing. Neither do. Tried watching the new Dexter show when it came out on Showtime, my hubs had to tell me what was going on. He's doing the same with Outlander on Starz too.

And he shouldn't have to. You're right, it's 2022 and they just don't seem to care.

Wow that’s crazy. Whether they care or not, how are they getting away with this from an ADA standpoint? I’m going to investigate that lawsuit further and see where things landed. Wonder if there’s any way to put some pressure on them. Thanks for the reply

I remember hearing about the suit, but never found out what happened with it. Wouldn't be surprised if they used money to get around having to add description in. If you find something let me know!

Dexter: New Blood has human-voiced AD on Amazon Prime. So does the Showtime show Yellowjackets.

It's not giving me the option for AD on Amazon. Says it's only available in English, but subtitles are available.

The Audio Description Project website has the note "only the purchase options have AD".

That's it then. Maybe I'll buy and check it out thus weekend. Thanks for the info!
