submitted by Aggressive-Yoghurt31
Hello everyone I am 18 years old and I have recently lost my vision I am very new to this when I could see I would run every day but now I don't know about it would you tell me some information about running while Blind I pretty much don't know anything I guess a treadmill is okay but how can I ran outside and how do guides work and what kind of technology is there? I hope I follow this passion despite my blindness thank you in advance

Don't know where you live, but there is a program called Achilles where guides are paired with blind runners. Looks like there are several chapters. There are various tethers a blind runner and a sighted partner wear. They are short but flexible to allow for movement. Cities with a Parks and Recreation program typically have some kind of adaptive recreation program for people with disabilities. Depending on size and culture of the city, these programs will have more or less programs. They generally have some kind of 1 on 1 program where you can customize activities, so you could see about pairing up with a running guide.

Thank you so much, I live on an island in Greece there is barely even a hospital here but I am not planning to stay here I will look for such programs wherever I go

My

My city’s blind org has one of these too. Personally, I just don’t run. If I am running, there’s a emergency and people around me should probably run too.

I run with a partner. We use a dog toy thing that has two loops of thick rope so I can hold one side and she holds the other. You have to pace each other step for step but it works. It's a lot of trust. The advantage is that the dog toy is bright dayglo pink and yellow so people shouldn't try to run between us.

I try and run on a track to lessen the risk of tripping and falling. If you have a local running group I would contact them. They may have people who would be willing to learn how to run with you. As others have said there are tethers so that the runner and guide are linked together.

Good luck to you!

In the netherlands we have running blind. They have lots of groups for blind runners and sighted guides.

With a cane and very carefully and meticulously. It’s very fast constant contact a lot of awareness and do it in a familiar area and a contained one. Keep your cane always on the ground and fast constant contact I’ve done some running for fun. And sometimes in a hurry run down the sidewalk.

I use a rolling tip cane and stay on the edge of the sidewalk (if my cane can drop off the curb then I’m by the edge). I also can ask a friend to go running with me and they yell right or left if I’m veering around a lot.

Oo very nice another person who just runs with their canes. I use a non rolling tip but do a really fast constant contact I don’t run often but that’s what I do too.
