How to Describe Colors to Blind People (self.Blind)

The first thing that comes to mind is to use temperature. For example, hold their hand close to something hot, and tell them "this glows red". Then an ice cube, which some people associate with blue. Then green grass, and the color green and so on.

You wouldn’t the truth is colors means little to those who have never seen them and are just not important. And it is not possible to describe color. Color and visual stuff like that is a completely foreign concept. And doesn’t mean much and becomes really arbitrary. Why is it important to describe. Maybe important to you but it seems trivial.

The only way is to describe the symbolism behind it and use it as a metaphor or symbolic language. Red for love blue for serenity, green for peace maybe that’s bleu too.white for cleanliness or purity or something like that black for guilt and shame.

I agree. Telling me the color of something means nothing.

Yeah, exactly I’ve talked to a lot of people blind from birth and this has been the overwhelming and common response. For me because I have been able to see it does mean at least something, is it really important meh. But I understand and at that point it’s useless explaining colors to me because I already know.

I don't think it is trivial at all. I mean think of germs or xrays. Most people with vision would never see those but we explain the concepts as best we can including shapes and patterns.

I mean if the specific person you are describing it to has no interest sure just drop it and move on it is wasted air. However I think there would be a significant amount of blind people that would appreciate the effort. I guess it would really depend on the person.

Thank you for your opinion.

Most people who were born blind really don’t haha! I’ve seen a lot of that type of consensus but even most of the totally blind population wasn’t born totally blind in the first place and at that point there’s no point explaining colors because we do remember them.
