Blind Young Adult Looking To Move But Unsure Where.(self.Blind)
submitted by SunStar5477
Hey all. So right now I live in a place I'm not sure if I wanna stay in long-term. However, I am not sure where to move to. The thing is, I do not wanna live alone. Due to various mental health things it would be better if I have someone around sometimes. Not always, but sometimes would be nice. Otherwise I feel rather isolated and it can affect my mental health. The thing is, I would prefer not to just search for any roommate. You never know who you could possibly get. And how accommodating they will be. I looked at Rumi, as that would be helpful, but I cannot work with that unless I live in Minnesota, which I do not. I know I need to learn to cook better. That's why Rumi would help, among other things. Not that i need "taking care of", just help learning and managing some things. But I would never rely on a regular roommate like that. So. I'm honestly open to almost anything. I'd prefer to stay in the midwest US, but if that's not possible then hopefully not too far away. But I will do whatever i have to do. I wanna continue my college education, but that would not work out well here. so yeah. Any suggestions welcome. Also, if you know of any apartment building or something similar in your area that is accessible for the blind, or you live in a blind friendly area, let me know.

Coming from Florida where walkability is a mess, and transit times are insane, I'd say Bloomington, Indiana where Indiana University is or other towns with large universities. I lived in Bloomington, and it is super accessible, and you can walk across the whole city in like 1 hour without even missing a sidewalk. It's hilly, you can get a rural transit door to door bus to take you to the largest lake in Indiana, para transit is amazing, jobs are plentiful, easy to find community groups and interest groups for disabilities, and bus trips are pretty short. Absolutely zero crime as well. I used to be an independent living specialist there, and found many folks like you housing with room mates for the same reasons. College town housing markets are actually designed around the concept of room mate situations a lot. The rest of the state sucks ass though.

Thank you for the suggestion! I will definitely look in to that

Yeah I think you'll find a lot of great information. I think it's ranked one of the top 30 most beautiful cities or something like that. I did the same as you and just started googling to find out where the best places were. Got tired of spending 3 hours on the bus to get to Walmart. Most expensive Uber in this city is like $20 to go from what it to the other. There's also another city and I can't remember if it's in South Carolina or North Carolina that really seemed cool to me in my research. I think it was chapel Hill South Carolina or chapel Hill North carolina? It's a college town and similar from my understanding

I know this is a longshot, but this is what my daughter did and it was an enormous success. She looked for a roommate on craigslist. She was leaving University and I needed a roommate because of expenses. She had expected to find a woman with a like situation. What she did find was a lovely young man who although younger than her, was willing to take a chance too. They have both moved on and gotten married but they are still the best of friends. Castanet wide. There are so many things out there that you can look into. As my daughter tells me, “Google it”. I live in Texas and I don’t think anyone would want to move here with the heat getting worse every year. I wish you great luck and I’m throwing positive vibes your way.

I've googled and googled and googled and tried Craigslist and so many roommate services. I appreciate your advice. That's amazing that she found a roommate.

I’m sorry I don’t have more information for you. Keep the faith whatever yours might be. And keep looking. I wish you so much the best of luck!

Hahaha! I was actually briefly thinking of texas and maybe we’ll see, probably not. My draw was the politics and the what was conservative culture of the state. I thought I would like to live in conservative areas but not so sure anymore. I’d miss the bigger city life and stuff.

The issue with accessibility for the blind is that it's generally in higher cost of living areas. While NYC, DC and Boston have great public transit, there's the issue of their cost of living being extremely high. Most states with reasonably good transit are stupid expensive to live in. Kansas City might be your best bet for staying midwest, given that I've had several friends living there who've enjoyed it and not had too many issues.

I just moved out of the Baltimore/DC area for this exact reason! New job there wouldn’t even offer me what I was making when I lived in the midwest. Urban places are often recommended by O&M instructors because of how pedestrian friendly they are (grid set up), and due to the abundance of public transport.

I will look in to Kansas City. Thanks for the advice.

Please look up kutztown university it’s in Pennsylvania and it’s an amazing college and town fully welcoming of the blind and visually impaired. I myself am legally blind and it was the best decision I ever made going there and living in that town.

Bigger citiies are better but it’s quite expensive, sometimes more crime ridden but there is everything it’s very walkable usually public transit is great and it would be a great place for blind people to live.

Yeah. I know where I am has some crime. But not as big as the huge city in my state. Any other suggestions welcome. Also, thanks for commenting on my other post. I'm curious which one your friend is at.
TechnicalPragmatist1 points1y ago
Yeah, he lives in chicago. If that gives you any indication. He no longer lives there and lives in a apartment part of a thing with his son his wife and his son’s wife grandmotherr? Mother? Something like that. But he’s moved out now. And not a problem.
I am glad there’s not that much crime there. There’s some crime here in the bigger city by me lots of it. But I live in a safe area with family at the moment and there’s little crime here. Downtown there is it’s a big city where I live too.

Yeah, where I am it is I am in the greater los angeles area. But this city can get interesting people say it’s a bad city too but it all depends on which part as well. Los angeles can be a mess but something like jewish town over there is very nice.
