How to cope with Charles bonnet syndrome(self.Blind)
submitted by fhifck
Hello! I have benefited a lot from this community. I went partially blind last year and my low vision specialist just diagnosed me with Charles bonnet syndrome. I’m 30. She said it’s because I lost enough vision that my brain is trying to “fill in” the blind spot and that it will bother me less in time. Was this other people’s experience? Luckily my CBS is not too bad I just see blue wavelike forms and nothing too crazy but I don’t *love* having opthamological visual hallucinations even if I do know what they are. Will it go away eventually? Should I just learn to be zen about it?

I've tried explaining what I see to my vision rehab dr and he tells me it's CBS. However, I don't see hallucinations. I just see random color and black spots in my good eye and waves of light in bad eye (I tend to believe it's the retina making momentary contact). So, I'm not sure how what I see qualifies as CBS.
Night time is kind of different, though. I'll be lying in bed with my eyes closed and I swear, sometimes I can see outlines of objects around my room. But everything is so faint, I'm not 100% certain.
So, I don't know if I have CBS or not.

I had exactly this, I see random red and green flashing patches, like if you close your eyes and rub them too hard. Sometimes it increases to the point where you can't think, you can't sleep, you can't concentrate on anything and it is horrible. I don't really know if this is CBS but it seems to come under the general heading anyway.

In my personal experience of 8 years of total blindness the hallucinations never go away. I began experiencing visual hallucinations of the world around me while my vision dimmed and lost contrast perception which were crisp at the time but eventually became fuzzy blobs of color when I lost all my useful vision. I don't think this is a bad thing though, as I prefer to have my brain fill the void with images if the alternative is seeing pitch black all the time, but I do understand that for those who experience disturbing hallucinations it must be somewhat disconcerting.

It's been three years since my initial vision loss. Right after I had surgery I went completely blind for about four months. That was the craziest in terms of quality and consistency of my hallucinations. I'm talking non stop full blown animals, cartoons, lights, flashing words, sparkles, etc.
I regained some of my vision and now I have a green and red line running across the middle of my vision with basically what I would describe as tv snow static all the time. Even when I close my eyes.

The only thing I can tell you is that you'll probably get used to it and hardly notice it over time.

Edit: Actually it's been three years.

Yeah this sounds familiar, though mine is different every day, like today have a bunch of noise on the right side that's mainly nonsense, yesterday it was almost none until evening then had some bright white in the top center. I have some vision so cannot always be sure what is real or not.
The room full of potted ferns with a random window that had headlights passing by every now and again was interesting.

I've gotten in depth on Charles Bonnet Syndrome $1.

Wow this is SO helpful, thank you! I feel like one the craziest parts of CBS is I “see” walls and edges and stuff but they’re not actually where they are in reality. The vision I have corrects to 20/35 or so but things aren’t visually in the right place sometimes. It’s very confusing.

Yes it is.
But it can be very entertaining, too. It's fascinating seeing our minds in action when we think we're seeing reality.

I sometimes get this if I focus in on it or sometimes get lights that move around. I’ve been totally blind for 20 years now. I don’t see random things often but can definitely sometimes. And occasionally it’s like see see the object. Sometimes at night I have dancing flashes of lights in colors I’ve not seen colors in many years and light for a few but yeah.there’s no light and sometimes I think I see light even when there’s none. I don’t tell this to many but thought I’d chime in. It’s definitely fascinating to me but it doesn’t bother me much. The lights moving is interesting to think about when in bed hahaha!

Thank you all for your kind words! My doctor reassured me too and said it is just my brain trying to be involved in the act of seeing. My visuals are mostly blue wave forms. But also I think sometimes my eyes play tricks on me with respect to depth etc. glad to know I’m not alone. this forum has been so great, thank you all
