Had assessments yesterday and all seemed ok. They tested my reading comprehension, English and math. Surprisingly, my math suffered a lot, but I couldn't use a calculator. At the end of it, they seemed quite enthused to help me find a compatible job, even if it meant going back to college. The surprising part is they are fitting the bill for all of it, even college if that's the direction they want to go. I'm not sure what kind of job I'll land in, but hopefully it'll be one that'll support me comfortably and let me live independently.
As for the SSDI, I was able to talk to 3 agents on Tuesday about filing for SSDI and claiming unemployment. The last agent was the most helpful. He told me that UI was not a problem and would only hurt getting SSI and encouraged me to continue claiming UI. I asked about the ALJ part and me reading about them denying claims because of UI and he said he never heard of any judge doing that. The first agent didn't know, but she did say they have strong evidence to support a low-vision disability claim, just have to do the eye exam on the 4th to finalize things. I even asked KS Unemployment office about this and specifically told them I was filing for SSDI and they were ok with it. I really don't know why anybody wouldn't be ok with it, though. I mean, I was separated from my last job, haven't had another; so, how am I supposed to know if I can work or not? Even then, if my SSDI claim is denied, then I'll still have the UI income coming in. It's a weird set of systems and they are clear as mud.

That's great news. What would you want to major in if you go to college.

I don't know. I tried a bs in computer science about 9 years ago, but I can't handle the math, lol! I won't settle on anything until I know 100%.

I'm so happy for you, brother. Things seem to be trending up. Keep your pecker up and don't let minor setbacks get you down.

Thank you!

I’m not sure how it is in Kansas but in Texas it takes about two years to get SSDI. I also believe that you are paid from the claim date. Good luck!

I was led to believe my case shouldn't take that long and I have read of others getting it within 6 months or so. The part that makes the process take so long are the appeals according to the agent I spoke with.

I certainly hope that is so for you. Really sit down and decide what you want to do for the rest of your life. Don’t let anybody else make those decisions for you. And don’t forget to travel❣️

Thank you!

And keep going! I’ve been learning SO MUCH about the services available to clients (job developer for VR, I’m new though) and they are there! They’ll pay for everything you need! Keep going and keep calling VR/DHS/ODDS!

Last week, I had the skills assessment. Got a phone convo coming next Wednesday to determine a direction. Hopefully, they have good options.

I work for an agency contracted by DHS VR as a job developer, walk into a worksource location, one of their counselors will be able to help you!!!!

This sounds great. Just a reminder that you can reapply if SSDI is denied. I know several people who had denials but got it on appeal.
Good luck to you!

Voc Rehab will pay for nearly everything for educational expenses but you’ll need to take care of somethings yourself. Just a heads up they will only buy items once. For instance if you need a CCTV for magnification they will buy you one but if it is broken while you were using it you will have to pay out-of-pocket for a new one, most of the time. So treat everything you get from them the best you possibly can. Because it is expensive as all get out. Also if you are going to go back to school get registered with the NLS system and bookshare.

Why not try ssi? Instead the office said I won’t be eligible but did give me ssi options.
And congratulations about the other stuff glad you’re getting a move on.
blazblu82 [OP]2 points1y ago
I applied for it, too. However, they'll deny it since I'm getting unemployment right now. The UI won't interfere with SSDI according to SSA.
TechnicalPragmatist1 points1y ago
That makes sense if ssdi doesn’t go through maybe try it again after unemployment?
blazblu82 [OP]1 points1y ago
Yeah, I don't really know. And that's the crux of it all. I haven't been able to work since my separation in February, so I can't prove one way or another that I can work. And with retinopathy being a progressive disease and where I currently stand with it, it's anyone's guess when the next event will happen. So, there's a lot riding on this case.

Why haven’t you been able to work because of vision or other sickness. If it’s just vision then learning to adapt and then going back may be the solution unless the job is so reliant on vision but most jobs can be adapted honestly.
