Does anyone have a handicap sign for parking? I can’t drive but would like to have one so that i don’t have to worry about dodging cars or tripping over speed bumps in parking lots when i go places with friends or family. But i’m wondering if this is pointless since i don’t drive… (self.Blind)

I asked this same question a few months ago. I did get a disabled placard even though I can’t drive anymore either. It’s been a huge help.

Oh good to hear! How did you go about getting it?

We downloaded the form from the DMV website and took it to my doctor. He filled it out and we took the form to the DMV. Not sure if every state is different if you’re in the U.S., but there was no fee and I got two placards that need renewed in 5 years. Got them immediately since we went to the DMV and didn’t wait for the mail. I keep one in my purse since different family members drive me places.

The process is the same in KY. I've been debating getting one for days when the pain from my Spina bifida flares up so I have looked into it recently.

Handicap placards can be generally obtained by someone who cannot themselves drive because they'll probably be a passenger in a vehicle at some point. In the event they are a passenger, whomever is driving them needs to be able to park somewhere the placard holder can access.

In these cases, the main caveat is that the driver cannot display the placard if they are not actually transporting the person linked to it.

NJ is basically the same, cannot remember if there was a fee, but is good for 4 years iirc, you need the placard and it's paperwork with you though.

Same in california and afterwards they just keep sending them to you. I have gotten them in the mail

In Ireland being blind/vi certainly qualifies you for a blue badge, which is linked to the person not the car, so yes as a passenger it is allowed for the same reason as you say, safer route to the building, less obstacles etc

I have RP and have one for night.

Decided I needed one after leaving a sporting event and headlights bombarding me into confusion basically. Was awful going through the lot.

Got the placard before I even started using a cane.

Absolutely! The Placards you hang on the mirror are associated with the individual.

I'm in Washington State and I got one without any trouble and I don't drive

Check with your local DMV, if someone takes you places you can get a tag. My MIL had one and would use it on whatever car she was riding in. If you do get one please don't abuse it by "lending it out" when people aren't traveling with you.

Good luck!

It's totally a thing. Good luck!

I have one and I had to pay five dollars per year to the DMV in order to have the plaque. My retina doctor has the form on hand that they have to fill out and turn into the DMV.

I'm so sorry that you have to pay for it, even a small fine that seems ridiculous.

Yeah in the US blind people are eligible. It’s so worth it.

I'm not blind but my mother is and she has one for when we go places together. You should be able to get the form from your states DMV and have your primary doctor sign it confirming your disability, then take it back to the DMV and get the placard the same way you would a license plate.

I have one and I don't drive, I carry it round with me so I can use it when family or friends drive

My husband is legally blind and qualifies for a placard. We have one on the car license plate and a hanging one. Montana, United States

I’ve got a UK blue badge and it is very helpful- as disabled spaces are easier for me to navigate back to and less risk of denting doors
