Accessible card payment terminals (self.Blind)
submitted by BlindFuryC
Hi there,

I've volunteered to be one of the sellers at a cake sale that my sports team is doing to raise funds. I know that most people there probably aren't going to be lugging around handfuls of cash though.

We're looking into using a card reader to take payments. I'm visually impaired and I believe my fellow salesperson will also be blind. I wanted to reach out to you guys to see if any of you have experience of being the seller and using these card payment machines with a visual impairment and if you could recommend any particularly accessible ones. Preferably if they also work in the UK.

I'm currently considering sumup and square. Any help appreciated.

Make sure the model you use has audio sounds to indicate when a payment goes through, and when it is declined. While it is pretty standard, I have come across some that don't make any sound at all.

If you guys have tap cards, you may want to put a tactile marker for where to tap, so the other staff can locate it to tell your customers. There usually is a symbol on the machine, but sometimes they are in unusual locations.

Hey! Square works pretty well with VoiceOver. I did basic things with it yesterday and I didn't see anything really wrong with it.

This is a general problem POS is not accessible. Unfortunately.

I’m thinking to get around this by using one that pairs with a phone. That seems like the easiest technical work around

Is there one like that out there existing?

Based on u/MusicLover035’s comment referencing voiceover, I believe so!

That’s neat, I hope you find something,. Maybe all pos system should be this way. Or all units that exist should be replaced by these.

There’s a reason we call them POS systems, and it’s not because they’re a point of service
TechnicalPragmatist 1 points 1y ago
So why shouldn’t blind people be able to use point of sale machines are blind people not suppose to cell things and use cash registers. How would you propose blind people go about it?

I was making a joke. I was alluding to the fact that POS is often used as an abbreviation for piece of shit which is what most POS terminals often are
TechnicalPragmatist 1 points 1y ago
They probably are, but ah, okay it didn’t seem like a joke hahaha! And I didn’t get it so now I understand
