Is there a technical term for this? (self.Blind)
submitted by blazblu82
Yesterday, I was out mowing the lawn with a push mower. On the few occasions I stopped for a quick breather, I noticed what seemed like the world moving away from me until I looked down then up again. I spent most of my time looking down while mowing.

Any idea if there is a technical term for what I experienced? Is it a form of vertigo? TIA!

I have the same problem, not sure if there is a technical name for it but it sorta has something to do with both you looking down at the grass and the vibration of the lawn mower causing some sort of stimulus in you body. at least thats as close as I can get doesnt happen when im walking the yard looking for debris

I know that feeling from a gas mower, but is electric and doesn't vibrate.

Sometimes, I'll get a milder version when I walk, but not always.

Thanks!

when is the last time you had any kind of eye exam? I have heard that a detached retinae will sometimes cause the same effect

End of Feb was last time. I have 2 coming up next month. One for SSDI and the other with my speciast.

Man, I hope it's not detaching. Last thing I need right now, ugh...

dont panic, but when you meet with the docs tell them about this issue better to nip it now than have it rear its ugly head when you arent expecting it

It is an optical illusion called "$1"

While looking down, the mower is stationary, but the grass is a fairly even texture and constantly moving towards you, so when you stop and look up most of your visual field was the grass moving towards you. The motion aftereffect results in perception of opposite movement from the stationary objects. So, it looks like things are moving away from you.

I wonder if it's eye related or if it could be an inner ear thing, or a nerve thing, if you're looking down the whole time you're mowing and then suddenly look up.

I have significant deterioration of the discs in my neck from years of hunching over looking at things and sometimes when I move my head just right (or just wrong), I get moments of this weird sort of vertigo.

It could be inner ear. I find myself getting car sick after 20 or 30 minutes and looking outside the whole time.

there's an optical illussion / trick, where you stare at a spiral and then look at your hand - the hand distorts.

video of such black spiral spinning in multiple directions.

That's not what I experienced. It appeared the world was moving away from me undistorted, like zooming out (decreasing magnification). I tried the link, the illusions didn't work.

Could be a motion aftereffect?
