I want my Instagram stories to be accessible. Can you answer some questions for me? (self.Blind)
submitted by Jade_Jaded
Hey,

I'm in the process of creating some highlights for my Instagram page. I created a design with text on the image to realise stories and highlights don't have alt text.

How do you view stories on Instagram and Facebook? Can a screen reader read text on a story? Not text that is flat on the image, but text that I add when uploading the story (like image captions).

I'm assuming that the best route would be audio and captions for my story.

Let me know what you think. Thank you!

That would be the way, but in general. I don’t think that instagram and facebook stories are very accessible.

Yeah, they are not even close, I have them turned off as much as possible but you cannot just turn them all off it seems, so I have to mute them one at a time.

Ugggggg!!!!

And here.

Yep, I need to check if that's been fixed but I doubt it.
TechnicalPragmatist 2 points 1y ago
I doubt it too. I don’t think it’s a bug it’s just how meta chose to do it.

Yeah, from researching around - they definitely aren't.

I'll use videos, audio and captions. My video game is weak but it'll be a good learning experience.

Thanks for your input though!
TechnicalPragmatist 2 points 1y ago
Probably video and audio is your best bet but a lot of. Us don’t even bother or don’t have access or find stories really challenging to navigate.
Jade_Jaded [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Ah, I understand. I think I'll make feed versions too. So the information can be found elsewhere on the page.

It's a shame I can't pin posts to the top of my profile on Instagram.
TechnicalPragmatist 2 points 1y ago
It is, that may be the best practice for sure. :D thanks for trying to help and be a good citizen.

I don’t use instagram or the stories feature on Facebook

This might, however, be a self fulfilling prophecy- there’s nothing for me there so no one makes an effort
Jade_Jaded [OP] 3 points 1y ago
Man, that sucks. An effort should be made though.

Someone else said they don't bother with the stories at all. I think the best route would be too put all the information in the stories into normal feed posts and reels.

That way the information is available in any format across my profile.

I'll be pestering Instagram and Facebook for better accessibility features.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Well we could always do with better advocates. We need them, really. God willing. I do what I can but there’s only so many of me, oh wait. I can’t quite multiply yet can I? Wait….. nope!

Always looking for others to help push and the more the better. The problem with meta is they are huge and they’re not that supportive or don’t care that much but the more noise the better. Would be cool if the stories and other things were more accessible. For now it seems like a photo album we can’t quite appreciate.

I couldn't agree more!

I'm a massive fan of someone called Alexa on Twitter. She's always working hard for better accessibility on the Internet.

Her website about accessible social media:
$1

Her Twitter (if you wanted to learn more about her work):
$1

I hope more people make an effort to create a better experience for everyone online. I also hope Facebook and Instagram improve their practices too.

I'll definitely be reaching out again to learn more.

Sounds good. And yeah, that sounds interesting I do something similar though mine is more local or behind the scenes I’ve suggested a few things on this popular reddit app that a lot of blind people use but try not to brag about it too much. The read counter is mine, the chat feature is thanks to me, I do promote that one, since people take it for granted he made it available it’s like uh… nope. Sorry. It wasn’t even considred actually. And other things. But yeah. There’s a good few of us who run around. Some of us are actualy in assistive tech. I am studying for a official cs degree to see if I go in to it or information tech work.

I am yet to find any way to make Instagram stories accessible, sadly. thanks for asking, though!
