Accessible Games you like or that you want (self.Blind)
submitted by Rethunker
Howdy! u/NoClops posted about a lack of accessible games. Aside from https://64ozgames.com, what sites do you visit to find accessible games? What are some of your favorites? What accessible games do you wish existed? What games that already exist do you wish were made properly accessible?

The number of accessible video games should continue to increase, but how about board games? Parlor games? Lawn games? No limit to the discussion.

Wingspan is a great board game, and frequently cited as one of the best board games of recent years, but I don’t know if an accessible version exists. No reason it shouldn’t. I’ll check with the makers.

Not much of a game person but I got hold of a bop it a year or two ago and almost forgot how fun those things are or just how addicting they are hahaha!

Woah. I’m not sure I’d even heard of Bop It before. And now I want one of the things. I’m really keen on good design, and for my work in assistive tech I’ll try just about anything promising.

Thanks!

You’ve never heard of or got your hands on a bop it? That’s interesting I thought everyone knew of those things. They’re a bit childish for sure, and simple but fun. It’s almost like simon says. It tells you and you do it. It was one of my favorites as a kid and if you are competitive it’s nice because you try to do as many levels as you can faster and faster and faster.

I saw one like 2 years ago and it’s like no way this is cool. So I started playing with it and all the childhood memories and fun came back hahaha!I think blindfold games or someone else tried to make an iphone gesture one too which I was fascinated by. Since it wasn’t a bop it the things you had to do was different. But it’s like shake it. And you’d shake the phone or tap it and you’d tap the phone or slap it and you’d slap the phone or flick it and you’d flick up on the screen. And it would go faster and faster until you couldn’t catch up in doing it.

Sort of a silly game but yeah.not sure why but I found it amusing entertaining. Simple time waster for a bit.

Sure not a problem.

The Bop It sounds very cool to me.

Another fun toy is the Mag-Pad magnetic drawing pad. It’s a huge grid with tiny steel balls in the holes at each grid point.

In short, you use a stylus with a magnet in one end to pull up small steel balls to the surface of the Mag-Pad.

You can draw tactile maps with it. Or make really big Braille. Or just doodle. Then you slide your hand across the surface of the pad to push the steel balls down and start over.

It’s addictive and cheap.

There’s also a smaller version called Magnatab available in many toy stores. I’ve given three of those away. Here’s an Amazon link to the Magnatab:

https://www.amazon.com/Magnatab-10607-Free-Draw/dp/B085Q4W3WX/ref=asc_df_B085Q4W3WX/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=459497226633&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=3683778658333783360&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9002004&hvtargid=pla-931922542497&psc=1

Here’s a link to a YouTube video about the Magnatab:

There are ways to improve the Magnatab for more durable doodling and sketching. All purely mechanical methods. But that’d take some design and engineering time.

Actually I’ve never heard of those but that does sound cool!

The guy at Lighthouse told me there’s an accessible Bopit on their website.

I’m having trouble finding what I saved in my stuff… I think you’re the person that I’ve been talking to who offered to have a chat sometime later in the month of May?
Rethunker [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Yes! Early June would likely work better for me; my schedule’s is still a bit packed.

Would early June work for you?
NoClops 2 points 1y ago
Perfect. Do you want to reach out to me when you have availability?
Rethunker [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Sure! I’ll send you a private message here, too, just to have separate channel for chatting.

Many of the Jackbox games are accessible to play but not to host. Quiplash, lie swatter, trivia murder party 2 and fibbage. TMP2 has the option to turn off some of the less accessible parts. Fibbage will have an occasional caption question where someone needs to describe the picture.

As to our computer and console use
* My blind Wife and I regularly race each other on Top Speed 3, battle on SoundRTS or play at Quentin's Playroom (my sighted daughter can join in with a few of the board games there too). The first two are old but still run on modern tech.
* MUDs, often with lots of cool sound effects and music added by the community, are a worryingly-disturbing time-killer: they range from medieval to sci-fi and everything in between and work well if you are a comfortable typist. They are the online version of interactive fiction/text adventure games, which I still play on my phone if I haven't the time or inclination to be social.
* I enjoy battling my daughter on Wii sports (Tennis, baseball and bowling are all pretty doable for me: my golfing is bad).

In regards to board games, any beyond your typical Monopoly or Scrabble. I also wish there were accessible versions of the Vampire the Masquerade or Cyberpunk 2020/Red character sheets and rulebooks. I ordered Braille dice through 64oz Games for D&D and they were horrendous quality (maybe through no fault of their own), so I'm reluctant to use them again.

In terms of video games, I remember someone mentioning they were going to make a text version of Skyrim and I still wish that will come to fruition. I think it would be super cool to have an accessible Fire Emblem (the recent games especially, for a more casual player base). I doubt that'll happen though.

For dice it may be necessary to use a different type of 3D printer, or to perhaps have molds made and create the dice that way.
CosmicBunny97 1 points 1y ago
Yeah, I got some resin Braille dice made for me by my dad's coworker. It was insanely expensive but so worth it. I wish I could make more.
NoClops 1 points 1y ago
My friend has a resin 3d printer. What sort of money did you have to put out. I’d at least like an idea before I approach my friend. Thanks.
CosmicBunny97 2 points 1y ago
I paid $250, but I'd recommend talking to your friend about it.

For boardgames, I prefer wheel of fortune and family feud with friends. Streaming these games in the Gamestar+ platform with with Steve Harvey hosting is more interactive
