Jobs that aren't Accessible (self.Blind)
submitted by GD_Wes
Hey Everyone,

Heard this podcast today putting a comedic spin on what jobs VI/Blind people can't do and how you could make them accessible.

Got me wondering what jobs people do that are odd and how they make them accessible?

I am a VI security guard I can see fairly well but have to use a magnifier to read the small print and the zoom function on the cameras sometimes to view details of people entering and leaving certain areas. I've made it work so well that I was promoted to site supervisor and gave five guards under my preview

Went to a temp agency and told them I'm blind, and they even helped me with paperwork. Went into the assigned warehouse and was immediately escorted to the bay where they parked the fork lifts. Was loud and confusing, so I just climbed up into that motha fucka. I at least wanted to see how long it would take the supervisor to get the point. Got to the pint of cranking it up, but when he seen how hard of a time I had feeling around for the ignition I think it really set in for him that this was really happening.

Not out of university yet, but I do have some hands on experience of working in a zoo! I interned with large carnivores and ambassador animals last summer and I'm going to be interning in a big cat/African animal department this summer!
I'm very low light perception in my right eye and have no peripheral vision. I'm also nearsighted in my left eye. I lack depth perception because of my lack of vision in one eye.
I've been able to do everything a fully sighted intern would be able to do for the larger animals. The smaller ones like the geckos and quail were harder because they have little poops that blend in with the substrate. Certain things take me a little longer, especially diet prep that involves cutting food items into small pieces for small animals, but I get the job done. I use my phone for viewing animals on exhibit and making sure that they are moving/acting normal. I'm super excited to start my internship this summer so I can get to know the animals I'll be working with. It's absolute chaos all the time and I just love it.
