Braille question: specifically level 2 on Focus 40. What is the difference between a 4-6 period and a 2-5-6 period? (self.Blind)
submitted by PumpkinPieHedgehog
I was really excited to update my version of JAWS, and noticed that when I have it on the same settings (Grade 2 contracted) that it added a few new contractions, for example -able and “to”. It also mashes contracted words together more.

I think I saw this before as well, but sometimes a period is shown as what I was taught to recognize— a dropped “d”, and other times it shows up as a 4-6. Do you know what the difference is between when these are shown?

Thanks!

You are seeing a braille code called English Braille American Edition. You typically use Unified English Braille. EBAE has been superceded by UEB, and there is no longer a reason to use it. To switch back to UEB:

1. Go to the JAWS window, then open the Utilities menu and choose Settings Center.

2. Type "output" without the quotes, and press DOWN ARROW.

3. Press SPACE until you reach the option Unified English Braille Grade 2.

4. Press TAB until you reach the OK button, and press SPACE to activate it.

The 4-6 period is either a decimal point (if written in the middle of a number) or a temporary instance of $1 which eliminates contractions and changes the meaning of certain signs (mostly punctuations, numbers and the alphabet remain the same.)

That’s interesting! It was definitely mixing up decimals with periods, then, but that’s good to know in case it pops up in math. I really appreciate the help.

Are you sure you didn't change your braille table? It sounds like you used to use UEB, and now are set to the old-style contracted braille (also called grade 2). This may explain the oddity with two period signs showing up as well. S

Oh my gosh, that’s it! I went through the drop down and chose the first class 2 that it said without realizing that wasn’t UEB. Thank you so much. It’s much clearer now.

No problem. The giveaway was some contracted words running together, and the use of a few contractions you mentioned that UEB got rid of. I'm glad this was an easy fix.

I have no clue what braille I read now other then my math braille which is Nemeth.

I think I did the same as OP and swapped my braille table when I updated JAWS.
