Id say get theft protection on the next one and save up

Besides saving up for a new one, no, not really.

Do you know if it was really a Virtual Reality headset (mostly used for entertainment) or could it have been an Augmented Reality headset that may have helped them interact with the world around them? Some augmented reality devices can have assistive applications. Most AR assistive devices are still in the research and prototype phases but some in early test, and a very few being sold as limited release personal medical devices. It might be easier to get a replacement device or funding for one if it's an AR assistive device instead of a VR device used for entertainment. It has been to long since I have been in that part of the world to know for sure

Not really sure how this relates to blindness?

No and I doubt you’d get it as it’s a gaming device and that falls under fun :)
If they can get insurance for the next one, I recommend doing that.
