When your brain has no idea what to do. Anyone else? (self.Blind)
submitted by K-R-Rose
So I’m legally blind but still have a lot of usable vision, mostly just useful to get around my environment. I was wondering if anyone else in a similar situation can relate;

At night or in dark places, my brain really does not like shadows. For instance, when I walk down the hall from my bedroom to the bathroom, I can see all the way across the house into the dining room. Usually we hang our coats on the backs of our chairs, so they are just blobs of darkness to me in the dim light. I know they are the chairs with coats, but because I’m not able to actually see and confirm that’s what they are, my flight or fight is triggered and I cannot force myself to walk down the hall. My primitive brain sees potential danger and won’t let me proceed.

I have other instances where I can’t properly see what’s in front of me so my brain scrambles to try to figure it out. This often leads to me thinking that a dried leaf on the floor is a dead bird, a sweatshirt is my cat, a stack of items is a person, etc. I’m pretty sure this phenomenon of the brain making up things to compensate for vision loss is a named condition (and it’s not Charles Bonnet Syndrome)

Sometimes I’ll also have “glitches.” If there’s something dark in my visual field (typically a chunk of my bangs lol), and if I move my head/eyes too quickly, the darkness will smudge and I’ll see dark shapes in random places. Sometimes it looks like there is a critter scrambling across the floor or a figure poking out from doorways because of what I described in the previous paragraph.

It’s kind of creepy, but it’s also fun sometimes. Anyone else?

I have peripheral vision loss (and poor central visual acuity) and I have certainly had situations where I catch just a glimpse of something, or just a shadow of it, and I just kind of instinctively jump/move out of the way/react and it's like... a coat on a store rack or a chair that someone moved. It's kind of the same "Ahhh!" jump reaction I have to stepping on one of my dog's squeaky toys before realizing it's a squeaky toy.

I've never been a fan of total darkness in general. I sleep with a night light and leave a light on out in the kitchen in case I need to get up at night. I don't know if it's related to my blindness, or just some basic human instinct to be wary of the dark that is, for some reason, stronger in me than it is most people. It doesn't feel like a "blind thing." I think it's just how my brain is wired. Being in complete or unfamiliar darkness just makes me feel.... *hunted*.

I have told people that sometimes I see things & sometimes I don't when it comes to my eyes. It's more on the line of I will sometimes see images that aren't there & often don't see images that do exist. I would often stop abruptly while walking thinking I saw something but the image disappears when I stop walking. A doctor had noticed that sometimes my eyes will tend to dance around. It happens when the brain is not able to get enough info from the eyes causing the eyes to randomly move around leading to imaginary images.

Have you considered leaving the lights on? Or, if you have the money, get smart lightbulbs so you can remotely turn them on? If those are not feasible, you can also invest in a decent flashlight/headlamp. Those could help in low light conditions.

I could, but it doesn’t bother me enough to do that. Also I live with people, and shining a light down the hall disturb someone in the other room. And no, we can’t close our doors. We have cats who will bang and yowl to be let in

I'm blind in my left eye and have poor vision in my right eye. I understand this completely! Not long ago, I was in my kitchen at night and I was stood at my sink, (if I look to my left from there, I can see the hallway and front door through the kitchen doorway), I did this and nearly had a heart attack, never experienced fear like it! There's a vase with giant feathers near my front door and when I looked, it appeared as someone's face. If I'm home alone or it's night, I will shut every door in the house, this helps this fear! Not fun lol

Omg that’s horrifying! Closing doors is a good idea, though. I might try that
