Hi, I’m 15 turning 16 soon and I’m planning to get my drivers license. Some bully’s at school have said that I’ll never get my drivers license since I’m blind in one eye. Does anyone know if I can still get my drivers license in Canada with only one working eye? (self.Blind)

Rule #1 ignore bullies.

I don't know about Canada but I'm legally blind in the US and I have my learners permit.

You'll have to pass the monocular vision test, first. It isn't an automatic dismissal.

$1

It might depend on where in Canada you are. I could technically drive in most American states, but 3 or 4 say no.

It probably depends on the province, rather than Canada itself, since licenses are done provincially.

https://www.ontario.ca/page/medical-review-ontario-drivers

Your vision will be screened with both eyes open and examined together, with or without the aid of corrective lenses (glasses or contact lenses). If you have vision in one eye only, your vision will be screened using only your functioning eye.

The screening will check that you meet the standards set out in Ontario Regulation 340/94 (s. 18), which includes both:
a visual acuity, which is measured by the Snellen Rating, that is not poorer than 20/50
a horizontal visual field of at least 120 continuous degrees along the horizontal meridian, and at least 15 continuous degrees above and below fixation

If you don't live in Ontario, look up your province and license for one eye and see what the testing process is. Just for reference, for a single eye with no vision issues, the average visual field would be 160 degrees.

Im in the US so its different but im totally blind in ome eye and ive been driving for 13 years. Drive off into the sunset and to hell with those bullies!!!

From what I know, you need to have at least 20/50 vision in your 'good eye' and a peripheral view of 120 degrees. That's for Ontario anyways, not sure about other provinces.

Not sure if you can in Canada but i live in Belgium and my brother lost his eye at a young age and he has a driverslicence and happely drives my blind ass around town. :)
So i'd say do that eye check thing and find out.
I really hope you can get your driverslicence.
I'm afrade those bully's might find something els to bully you with but just show them the licence, wish them a happy day and drive off wile honking.

Good luck

I'm in the US and was able to get a learners permit with one eye. I was required to have side mirrors. I hated driving though so I never got my license.

Hey i have RP and live in BC, and just went thru the process of special testing to keep my license.

My eye condition is different but i think the same process applies.

So there are legal requirements to drive in Canada, and the rules vary a bit per province. In BC you need to have 120 degrees of vision and be able to see x/20 vision (cant remember the exact number).

In the past if you didnt meet these conditions, you wouldn't be able to get a drivers license. But a guy went to court to prove how this is unfair and won.

So now if you don't meet the legal requirements you go through a special 2 day test (one day at a rehab center the other is a drivers test with an ICBC testing person and someone from the rehab services) to show that you are still a safe and competent driver

After the test they will come up with 3 possibilities

1. You're deemed fit to drive and have to go back every year for testing or if your vision changes
2. You're deem unfit to drive
3. They'll recommend lessons thru the rehab center to develop systems for you to learn to drive better.

In my case my optician notified ICBC and road safe bc who sent me a letter detailing the various rehab services i could go to who would do the testing for me. This is a little different than you as i was already dricing for 8 years when I was diagnosed but i think if you don't meet the legal requirements to start, you would probably have to go through the rehab center

Contact ICBC or road safe BC (or the equivalent in your province), or a rehab driving service if you've got questions. I've found them to be really helpful

And good luck!

Could you possibly supply a number for that? I couldn’t find one

Whatever you do always be mindful of the ability to change someone's life for the worse in an instant.
Hitting someone or something can have devistating consequences for all physically, financially, etc.

Also, eff those bullies, they never matter anyway. That's hard to know in the middle of it all. They'll be gone soon, I hope

But if you’re only blind in one eye and you have one working one, you’re not even really blind.
