Two questions about guide dogs (self.Blind)
submitted by siwy4don
Hello, I'm getting my first guide dog in a month and I have two questions. The first one is: Should I expect any problems in hotels or on beaches with a guide dog? I'd like to go to Spain or Italy on my holiday, but now I'll have my guide dog with me and I don't want to be rejected. The second question is: Can I walk with my guide dog and hold a date with my right hand at the same time or would it confuse the dog?

A guide dog may not be forbidden on a beach, but nor may it be overly helpful. Traction on sand is difficult for some dogs and you might want to consider the dog's comfort in the heat, its usefulness while you're just relaxing on the sand etc.

As to using your other hand, go for it. I carried my daughter around in a sling with a dog, then held her hand as she got older. One of the benefits to a dog I found was being able to mentally switch-off for large parts of familiar routes, which I struggle to do as easily with a cane.

Using a cane at the same time might not be a good idea, though. From personal experience, dogs usually see canes much like they would regular sticks, i.e. they try to eat them. Also it kind of defeats the purpose of having a guidedog in the first place.

I think it would be best to look up the hotel/beach you are going to but usually you are allowed to have it since a guide dog is not a normal dog. I cannot speak for every country of course but in Germany for example they aren't allowed to deny your guidedog.
