Smart stove (self.Blind)
submitted by Nikanoru181
Hey everyone,

Quite a journey my wife and I have been on. After losing vision in her right eye from diabeties after tganksgiving, and having no lense in her left eye since 3 years old. Life has been a challenge! I wont get into the details, but man is she awesome, and much love to this community that I have been lurking in for some time for advice.

One thing however, drives her insane! And that is the ability to preheat an oven with a digital interface. Despite consoling her that I am indeed capable of setting the oven, understandably, she wants to be self sufficient which i am very proud of!

Shopping around...most appliances are now digital interface which sucks! The burners are easy enough, we use different bump tabs for different settings and have gas which can be heard and smelled. But the oven part I cant find a good unit with a analog control. I did see a few options for "smart wifi enabled" stoves however from LG and GE.

Does anyone here have experience using a smart stove? Right now most everything is being ran by Alexa, but wouldnt be opposed to a different setup to run alongside if needed to make it work.

I have a GE Smart oven that I control with Alexa and it works out really well

Can you also control the stove top?

No, those are just knobs, The app does tell you if the stove top was left on but can’t control it

You may have to find older models. Definitely harder to find but you can still find them. My parents were really looking for an accessible toaster oven one of those that sit on the counter top and they searched for a while but finally found one.

My moms solution was to buy an older stove, like early 2000s which had a ton of tactile bumps. I’ll update this comment when I get the brand from her!

Some digital ovens are still quite usable, you just need to be aware of where the temperature starts. instance, it may start at 300 and go up by 5 every time you press the up-arrow. If you lose count, you press stop and it goes back to 300. It's not ideal but it's more than workable, and arguably more accurate than estimating the position of a dial. The hard part is knowing whether a stove will do this or not. If it saves your last temperature, that's not ideal at all as you then don't know what it's set to without looking.
