What are some good resources for finding a job in Texas while being legally blind? (self.Blind)
submitted by DaniCherryJam
For context, I'm legally blind with 20/200 vision in the only eye I can see out of, with both optic nerve damage and cortical blindness. Still enough vision to work with as long as I have a cane and a phone on-hand!

People weren't the best at teaching me at a young age (or any age for that matter) on how to get a job with such a disability, everyone just assuming "someone else told you, right?", so far nobody has been able to actually give me any pointers so now I'm here. If there are any organizations, agencies, etc that can help me find any work, I'd be thrilled.

Currently I just have a high school diploma, if that helps, but I am very eager to go through any training and am 100% determined to do almost any work, baring some edge cases.

Are you working with vocational rehabilitation for the blind. Or blind services from your state. Dor here in california some is commission for the blind.

Also have you really gotten to know yourself down to the core down to the bone?

I was in your position floated around school for ten years desperately didn’t know what I wanted to do. Investigated every single personality system I could find and found it help r/mbti r/socionics r/enneagram holland codes, big five, disc, etc…..

Lots of deep reflection and help me draw some very hard truths about myself started connected the dots on how much I’ve worked in tech for the last 10 years. Typology was a real breath of fresh air.

What do you like to do? What are you passionate about? Figure out how to monetize something you love already

I plan on making my passion my job at some point, but everything needs at least some income to jump off of, currently just looking for any work as just a simple starting point. I really can't afford to start a business right now, but I'll definitely attempt it in the future.

I needed time to restructure my career goals, and got sick of getting discriminated against in interviews. Hated my past job so bad I literally get fed up and went to my local university and begged for a job. Dishes were the most accessible, so now I wash dishes for a dorm that serves 10,000 students a day and I actually love it more than a desk job or work from home job. Make more too, with kick ass benefits. Once you're hired on it is literally impossible to get fired as well unless you screw up. Some universities if large enough will create a position for you that is accessible. Usually have to apply for a job and immediately go to the university's office of institutional equity and ask for accommodations and provide concerns. Easiest way to be honest.

Contact your vocational rehab counciler and ask for a job coach. They can help you develop vocational skills so that you may find a job. Have you gone to a rehab training center for the blind? They have career readyness programs.

I haven't! Sifting through this subreddit made me realize just how many resources I wasn't given growing up, haven't even heard of the word "vocational" until last week.

I'll definitely give it a shot, this actually seems like it'll help a ton. I've located a vocational office near me that I can contact, thanks for alerting me to this!

You say phone on hand. Do you know how to use a computer?
DaniCherryJam [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Yep, I'm decently tech literate. I can use most things with a screen as long as I can get close to it and can zoom the text in.
