Yup! That and showdown are pretty well-known here in Slovenia. Can't say I was any good at them, but I did play both while in the blindy school, before moving to mainstream.

Another Aussie checking in. Can't say I've heard of Showdown either. I'll have to look that one up :)

That’s interesting. I’ve played Goalball for a while and just wanted to see how many others have.
I’ve never heard of showdown though (from Australia). I’ll look it up!

I first heard of it during the most recent Paralympics. It seems like it would be so fun to play!
Cautious_Ad_1054 [OP]1 points1y ago
It is! You should give it a go
bradley224 points1y ago
I played it as a kid, it wasn’t really my kind of thing but it was alright.
letspaintthesky4 points1y ago
I've heard of it. If I could find a local 'just for fun' team, I'd join.
Cautious_Ad_1054 [OP]2 points1y ago
Yeah sometimes it can be hard to find a local club. I have to travel nearly 2 hours to get to mine
letspaintthesky2 points1y ago
Must be a good club then, if it's worth that much fucking about :)
Cautious_Ad_1054 [OP]3 points1y ago
Yeah haha. I really value the community side of it too so for me it’s worth it. A bit sick of buses and trains though lol
letspaintthesky3 points1y ago
That's the bitch of it, the buses and trains and shit. Mostly because, you know, sighted people. So many sighted people... sigh

When I was young, maybe 10 to 13, we had a team in our area and I used to play. It was a lot of fun.
Cautious_Ad_1054 [OP]2 points1y ago
So cool. Why did you stop?
Complex_Platform_9813 points1y ago
Yes!! I work at a camp for the blind in the summer and it’s one of the popular Rec activities!!
Cautious_Ad_1054 [OP]2 points1y ago
That’s how I found it too, at a blind camp
Complex_Platform_9812 points1y ago
Enchanted hills camp for the blind?
Cautious_Ad_1054 [OP]2 points1y ago
Oh no haha I’m from Sydney, Australia
Complex_Platform_9812 points1y ago
Well if you are ever in America I gave a great recommendation for you!
TechnicalPragmatist3 points1y ago
Know of it haven’t played it personally.
Cautious_Ad_1054 [OP]2 points1y ago
Should give it a try
TechnicalPragmatist3 points1y ago
Yeah, haha! Maybe
ravenshadow20133 points1y ago
Jacksonville has their own team went to nationals a couple of times
Cautious_Ad_1054 [OP]3 points1y ago
That’s awesome, you must be good
ravenshadow20132 points1y ago
I have a client that plays on the team ive never played
Cautious_Ad_1054 [OP]3 points1y ago
Oh nice. That’s still really cool. Do you enjoy watching it?
ravenshadow20133 points1y ago
I've seen a few matches it pretty awesome
Wolfocorn203 points1y ago
yep i play both from time to time. I do prefer torball over goalball tho.
Cautious_Ad_1054 [OP]2 points1y ago
Fair enough!
Fuzzybo3 points1y ago
It’s been $1. Our family watched it at the Sydney 2000 games, cheering on the Danish team.
Cautious_Ad_1054 [OP]2 points1y ago
That’s so cool!
ForceR-13562 points11m ago
I play goalball, love watching it too.
jage92 points1y ago
Here's a $1 if you are interested in following or being a part of goalball in the U.S.
Cautious_Ad_1054 [OP]1 points1y ago
I’m from Aus but appreciate it anyway
CosmicBunny972 points1y ago
I tried it once at a Vision Australia independent living camp back in 2016 or so, though don't remember what I thought about it. I'd be willing to try again, but if it's anything like my first time trying swish, it'll be terrible because I have awful reaction speeds.
Cautious_Ad_1054 [OP]2 points1y ago
The vision Australia camps are good, but it will be a lot better if you sign up with blind sports Australia. If you don’t mind me asking, what state are you from? Each state (besides TAS and NT I think, at least I’ve never heard of them) has a blind sport committee that I know of.
CosmicBunny972 points1y ago
I’m in QLD, I think goalball is through Sporting Wheelies from what I’ve heard.
Cautious_Ad_1054 [OP]1 points1y ago
Yeah ok. I know a lot of the Queensland players through nationals
SLJ71 points1y ago
I lived in a small city that didn't have a very active team, but once upon a time I played and enjoyed it. It's well-known in Canada and US, particularly Canada for some reason.
PungentMushrooms1 points1y ago
Never played it but I recently did a whole bunch of research on it because I think it sounds awesome. It seems to me like one of those sports that has a very high skill ceiling. I think the sign that it's a cool sport is that even sighted people think it's cool once they learn about it.
