Being told that you are being babied in the workplace.(self.Blind)
submitted by TurtleKnife
I started a new job recently. A few days ago my boss and I were talking and he brought up that he was “babying” me. This statement didn’t make me feel too great and I felt as if I needed to put up a defense. To kind of state where this is coming from the day prior I was working on an audio mixing board and I got some of my levels wrong. He came in and showed me how to fix it. Then after our talk he let me practice some things and I got the hang of it. I got out of university a year ago and this is my first job in my field. I haven’t had much opportunity to practice throughout the year. I feel like I’m making something out of what should be nothing and making a big deal out of this. In the past I have had employers beat around the bush about how my vision is a problem in one way or the other. Which I really hope that this isn’t happening here because I really enjoy my job and I can do it. I there have been other things that have back up the reason why I think my boss is wanting to keep me on but there is just something that is eating at me about his “baby” comment.

Def not a cool comment to make. I'm in music myself, the whole meters thing is tough because they're visual. Idk what the board is but for this specific problem, it may be possible for you to utilize a plugin called accessible peak meter. If you google it you'll find it pretty quickly. As for how I would respond, honestly, my knee jerk reaction would probably be "I didn't ask to deal with this shit but unfortunately I gotta make my living in the world you assholes created, I'm sorry I'm not satisfactory or normal enough for you." Def don't say that lol. Or do, idk, depending on what you have to lose.

Yikes. I wouldn’t like that at all. You have every right to be upset about it. Plus, there’s a learning curve with any job starting out whether you’re blind or not. I find it very inappropriate and insulting for your boss to say they’re babying you by simply showing you how to do your job correctly.
I’d be cautious going forward towards your boss. I know you said you just recently started, but if it was me I’d already be making a backup plan for a new job somewhere else.

Exactly. In that new employee context it almost feels like he didn't mean to use that word. I have a new job and I'm going to be pretty useless for weeks until I've been there long enough to know what's going on, that's just how it works.
Idk if I would immediate jobsearch over one comment... but it's definitely a red flag that is good to notice

I didn’t mean to leave now due to the comment, but just to have a plan in place in case this situation becomes the norm or worse.

I definitely think he was being honest about it. I don’t allow special treatment or patronization because of blindness.
A lot of people will just do it or think you’re lesser and don’t even mention it and will prevent you from doing things or go softy on you and not expect just the same as everyone else.

Sometimes these comments are just guys on guys shit talking to themselves. You have to remember this. I call my boss daddy/pappa sometimes as a guy thing. Its not offensive in anyway towards him. He calls us his children again in a joking way. My response to that babying comment would be "oh you just jealous, that your the adopted step child." I know it sounds horrible. But it will put the ball back in your court.

Was the level problem something he needed to visually fix, or was it just a general audio problem? Are you actually encountering any problems that would go away if you were able to see? I suspect this is just general newness and maybe it's natural for the boss to assume that being blind makes it harder to succeed. I still don't like the comment, but all you can really do is your best, and with a half-decent setup I think it's possible for us to do pretty well in an audio-related job.
