NFB scandal (self.Blind)
submitted by boobsandcookies
Has there been any update at all with all of the sexual assault stuff at Nfb? I’ve had to step back a lot due to illness but honestly I don’t see much. I don’t think they really ever committed to systemic change in the beginning. Nothing has convinced me that they are now.

There are more thoughts I have about the organization that I won’t post here. In sum, they have done good things. I enjoyed my time as a member and I am saddened that they aren’t as good as they could be.

But have there been any actual changes? Aside from the external investigator? Which is a whole other issue. Is anybody actually been held accountable? With actual action? Or is it all window dressing?

Hi! So I actually can answer this question :) since I'm a leader in a couple of their smaller organizations lol. There's definitely been action (saying this from a person who didn't want to be associated with them for a little bit honestly). People who have positions in which their board members/leaders have to attend mandatory trainings for inclusion and about boundaries. They are quietly taking out people from their organization who have committed SA against people in the past, or who have been associated with it.

If a minor will be staying with you, you need a signing permission slip. They are super super cautious about it now, to the point where I think they're looking at everything closely. They have a lot more precautions now, and I personally feel safe although I always have a friend with me in general.

Edit: I forgot to mention, if leaders hear about SA from a person who tells them about it we are required to report it, even if the person doesn't want us to. People's identities are kept quiet, however, only told to certain people.

I appreciate this. I do wish that a list of individuals would be more readily available. I’m just tired of all of the silence. I understand the logistical challenges, but I’m tired as we all are.

I do appreciate the incremental changes that are being made and the people who have the will to stick around.

I certainly hope all the stuff stops but yeah, not a big fan of either organization either way.

This is the first I've heard about NFB's sexual assault allegations. Can you recommend something good to read about it?

If you want an uh, awful catchup, here's some of what i found on google rather than trying to summarize and maybe get something wrong.

You were right, that was awful.

No more internet for me today.

If this is what’s public imagine what else is not spoken about, so many people just don’t care when it’s a disabled person

Thank you, I was trying to remember all of the articles

I'll have to read up on what actually happened. I remember reading something about it but was vague.
Despite being a member, the times I personally contacted them for assistance, I was disappointed. No responses and promises not kept. I suspended my charitable contributions for now.

I didn't feel they were sincere. I don't mind most of the people in it, but like most organizations in general, I can't stand the top leadership. I just eventually stopped working with any group or organization.

Not living in the US so I don’t have anything useful to add about this specific situation, but it saddens me to see issues like this be so common at charities. TLDR I’m on the board of a local charity here and we have tons of issues cropping up about workplace bullying, executive committee members resigning, and finger-pointing about useless things. I wouldn’t be surprised at some point to find out there’s cases about sexual assault some day, though I obviously hope not.

I only just joined the board this year knowing the organisation had some problems, and hope me being more outspoken can help push for some of these issues to be resolved. Fingers crossed our new board gets somewhere, but like I said above, this is really sad to see.
