Sending voice messages? Which app to use? (self.Blind)
submitted by Vetenskapsteori1
Hi,

My friend is blind and I wish us to be able to send voice messages between us as easy as possible.

Which apps would you recommend?

Thanks!

Facebook messenger works, they lifted their 1 minute restrictions. If you both use iPhones then the native iMessage will work too

Yeah, same goes with messages on android, though I would also ask why voice specifically, cause I think a lot of us here just use screen readers and text chats.

I do know some folks -- both blind and not -- who prefer voice messages. Even I am among them sometimes. It's nice to hear a person's voice, the mood, the inflection. I definitely wouldn't use voice messages for everything, but for certain chats with friends they are quite nice.

I thought that maybe the case.

And great point i was thinking this but didn’t want to be a jerk

I highly recommend Signal. It's simple to set up and use, and entirely accessible on both Android and iOS. The desktop app -- at least on Windows -- is somewhat more wonky, but still useable. Also, it is privacy-friendly, with strong encryption that works out of the box without the user ever needing to worry about it.

I love Signal, but last time I looked at the desktop app (several years ago) it was not very accessible at all. Do you know if it's gotten better?

Probably not, or at least not by much. But it's useable, or at least I can use it. The jumping of focus can be a pain sometimes, so I wouldn't use it for paying attention to groups. But for exchanging text and voice messages with friends, it's good enough.

I like Telegram.

Skype is also an option, although I prefer Telegram.

There is Threema, though you have to pay 2.99, or maybe 3.99 for it? You can record voice messages, even messages that are 30 minutes longer or more. You can also audio call each other on it, or video call. I mostly use it on my phone though, so not sure how much it may differ on a computer. I've only ever typed messages on it via my computer.
