Accessible design of video games reduces immersion (self.Blind)
submitted by JaneSunMoon
From time to time I feel that features such as voice reading negatively affect my gaming experience. Is there any way to make the game accessible to the visually impaired community without compromising immersion and enjoyment

There are workarounds, but there is no true substitute. I was a huge gamer before going blind seven years ago, I’ve completely given it up until robot eyes, so I can fully enjoy them.

Unfortunately, not completely.

The more immersive a game is, the more it makes us forget the real world around us exists. Anything that breaks the spell is going to bring us out of our immersive experience and back to the world of rising prices, cracked cell phone screens, and dirty dishes.

A voiceover can be made more immersive - just have an in-game character explain the information instead of a clunky narrator. But even when it's done almost perfectly (Darth Vader: Immortal on the Occulus Quest, for example) it's still reminding you you're interacting with a plastic game controller in your hand, not a lightsaber or a steering wheel or a fully automatic assault rifle.
