Has anyone applied for a tuition waiver in Texas? (self.Blind)
submitted by EffectiveYak0
Has anyone applied for and received a college tuition waiver in Texas?

If so, what documentation or hoops did you have to jump through? Did they accept your own doctors letters and medical records or make you go to another doctor?

I received mine through DARS, rehabilitation services. I had a caseworker, they received a copy of my medical records, and was told I had to choose between re ceiling their help for school or a job. I chose school. I received my certification of blindness to hand to school and they paid for my supplies.

Give them a call and they should be able to help you.

I called the Texas Workforce Commission and they're getting me in touch with a case worker. I don't know if I can just hand them my copies of all the records or if I need to get my original doctors notes forwarded directly from a few different cities I've been treated in.

The TWC reps handle this every day! They'll issue your certificate of blindness, if you're eligible, and they'll help get it to your school of choice. You may also want to look at loan forgiveness for people with permanent disabilities. I don't know a whole lot about it but I have a couple colleagues using it to pay for grad school.

Yeah when I first had surgery I was completely blind. I was using my long term disability policy and applying for SSDI. I looked into loan cancellation for permanent disability but there are strings attached like not making over a certain amount of money for 3 (or maybe 5) years. My vision did improve a bit, and I found a job so I never pursued that option.

It is only possible through something like vocational rehabilitation or else it’s not possible.
