Mac OS - volume forSpeech Content set to read from mouse hover (self.Blind)
submitted by potato_rock_bandit
Hi folks, new Mac user and I haven't been able to reduce the volume of the on-board text to speech software on my Mac. I navigate by mouse right now so might be missing a surprise menu somewhere, but tbh it shouldn't be this hard?

I want to turn down the volume of the voice reading my mouse hovers, but the only way I've found to do that is reduce the system audio output, which also makes everything else quieter too. I can reduce the VoiceOver volume, but that doesn't affect the mouse hover volume. Right now the hover voice is yelling over top of the stuff I am trying to listen to or focus on, I need to adjust this pronto.

It’s in the system prefs. If you go in voice over utility and speech you can adjust each one and voices and settings. I had each task set to a different voice at one point.

ty, it sounds like I should have found the solution by now, been tinkering with it for two days and have gotten nowhere much. I am sure Apple Support will be very helpful, just have to go through the process of figuring out how to do that part, the contacting them. I think that's the only thing I miss about my Windows PC is that Microsoft Support could remote access my desktop and modify it directly for me while on Be My Eyes. I don't think Apple has a team for BME.

Do you want to connect on zoom I can help you perhaps? I’ve been helping people for a long time. And I am a mac user primarily.

You can call apple accessibility too.

T Y S M! :). You providing the number helped me get in toiuch with them after trying again today. I explained what I was wanting to do and they let me know there's no way of doing that on my Mac, the hover voice is directly connected to the system volume. It's only a problem for me because I'm viewing You Tube and Twitch streams and working with Twitch, and the problem with the disparity between the video's volume and what I've got to turn up my speakers to to fix it, it's jarring.

There's probably some audio tecnical shenanigans I could get into to split the main output volume into two channels, one for VoicOver and one for everything else, and then be able to adjust the channel volumes individually on some kind of board. But my whole rationale for switching from PC to Apple was so I wouldn't have to do complicated things to get reasonable features met. In fact, I deeply desired never needing to look under the hood.

Ha, that devolved into a frustrated visually impaired person's rant quickly. This is just the kind of thing that has always frustrated me throughout life and losing vision has not improved my reaction.

Oh that number can be useful I may need to call it to report a bug with ibooks another one.

But yeah, keep that number handy.

That’s interesting I guess it has speech categories for that and everything else but that darn! Would be cool if that was adjustable, worth suggesting.

That makes sense. Sorry to hear that.

It would be something I’d push for and suggest maybe the engineers will hear you at least if enough people said something.
