What do you guys do when the website you are on has hotkeys, but they conflict with NVDA? (self.Blind)
submitted by ChipsAhoiMcCoy
For example, on YouTube, K pauses the video, but K also does something in NVDA as well. What would I do in this instance?

NVDA has "browser mode" which you can enable and disable using nvda key + space. Usually when you open a webpage browser mode gets activated and you can move in the page and use NVDA keys. When you want to use the shortcut keys belonging to the webpage, just disable browser mode and use the keys. Afterward, when you want to explore the page again active browser mode again.

Ahhh awesome! Do you know if this works on programs that aren't web pages? For example, Discord has a hotkey which allows me to hop b between channels, but I'm unable to u se them because the hotkey is CTRL + Alt + Down or Up

If the program isn't web-based, you need to press NVDA key + f2 before the key you want. For example, for the key you talked about, you need to first press NVDA key + f2. Then press ctrl + alt + down arrow or whatever else you need to use.

Awesome, thanks! Do you also happen to know if there are any free high quality voices I can load onto NVDA? I saw in the settings one day that you can change the voice that it uses, and I did see online that there is some voice pack you can buy but it's ilke $59.99, so I'm not usre if htere is something that either is a ltitle cheapear, or something that is free that sounds high quality?

Thanks for all your help!

Unfortunately, all high-quality voices are commertial. Are you using Microsoft voices or ESpeak? I'm personally using Eloquence. I've been using it for a long time, so I like it the most. It's in gray area when it comes to copyright, because it's kind of old. So you could use it.

Since Discord is an Electron app and functions like a webpage in every way, yup, you can also use it there.

Although testing it now, alt+control+down seems to move me to the next server, rather than channel. If that is what you are after, control+tab does the same thing, or you could use control+the number of the server you want to go to (with 1 being home). For navigating between channels, use alt+down or up, and for navigating between just the unread ones, alt+shift+down or up.
$1

However, if you ever find you need NVDA to ignore a keypress elsewhere than a website/web application, try NVDA+f2. It will pass just the next key or combination you press through to the system.

If any of NVDA's shortcuts just bother you altogether, you can also change them! Press nvda+n and go to Preferences>Input Gestures. You can delete hotkeys there, change them, or even add them in some cases. For example, the article element in webpages does not have a dedicated hotkey, but I've set it to j and shift+j, which helps a lot on Mastodon and other such websites with plenty of them.

Discord *is* a webpage, just running in its own program window rather than a browser. If it weren't a webpage, you wouldn't be able to use web commands, and alt+ctrl+arrows would work. Since it is, normal web rules apply.

Very minor correction: rather than enabling and disabling browse mode, you are switching between browse and focus mode. And focus mode, in addition to NVDA+space, is also activated when pressing enter on an edit box. In each case keys pass straight through to the application, but of course in an edit box that means you can write text.

As already said, NVDA has browse mode and focus mode. Focus mode allows you to send keyboard input directly to a webpage, without it being handled by NVDA.
Moreover, some apps, like discord, which is made with electron, are web-based, in a way, and also support this feature.
