ableism at work (self.Blind)
submitted by BlindWizard
So I work as a massage therapist and have been there almost a year at a chiropractor's office. I have had some trouble with one of the chiropractic assistants making inappropriate blind jokes or saying mean jokes at my expense. In the very beginning. I laughed this off because they were lighthearted enough but as time has gone on they've gotten worse. And from what I've seen of this person's interactions, they tend to use cruelty as a humor device with everyone. I have mentioned this to the practice manager and nothing has come of it and eventually I ended up calling them out in front of clients and the boss because they were refusing to tell me whose file I had in order to go take my client. So I don't know if things will be different tomorrow, but that's kind of behavior is pretty frustrating and makes it pretty disheartening to be able to work.

This ended up being more rent than a question, but how do you deal with ableism at work?

I work in the back of a kitchen so it’s acceptable to cuss them out and loudly. As long as the customers can’t hear then it’s free game. Most people like that give up once you lay into them hard. Being polite doesn’t tend to work, at least where I’ve worked. HR was useless lol.

I can see (my dad and 3 off his siblings are completely blind), and unfortunately I have to agree, HR can be just a pain. I had a boss, calling me at home, screaming at me, my anxiety got so bad I was having panic attacks when I saw a flipping email from the guy. But, I like to think that this kind of behavior, peer to peer, can be reviewed vs protected.

I’m shocked to hear about work environments where harassment and bigotry is allowed to thrive like this. Crazy. Nobody should have to put up with this

I just want to say I’m sorry you have to deal with this. You’re doing your job, just like the rest of us, and this guy is messing with you for it? He should be reprimanded at the very least, just for the one infraction you fully described. I get that it’s 2022 and folks do tend to get worked up, in this case, it’s inappropriate and needs to be addressed. It sounds like you work for a small business? If you have an established HR department, go there if you’re comfortable doing so. Equal Opp was created for a freaking reason. I wish you luck 🙏

I'm sorry that is sofucked up. I don't know what state, but I would find your local discrimination agency and give them a call.

Yeah, it’s hard if the boss or manager doesn’t want to do anything it’s hard if it’s a stand alone shop that’s also harder. If there’s a governming body may help but the owner of that shop may not like that. And you may not be in good graces. Blindness and work can be hard.

I was working at a disability office of all places, and the sighted and non disabled girls came in and basically did my job for me, I had no job at that point to do. I was an assistive technologist. And this couple people mostly guys and I think womanizers who are blind sick blind people kind of a totally blind culture thing but okay, being kinky you know they don’t want to deal with me because I give them and allow them no excuses and they want to flirt with the gals in the front asks them to do it for them. So they did. But also other things. They came and did my work. And I am like if I was not the blind one they’d say go and ask prag in the lab she’s the lab assistant. I was the it help desk person as well, but they’d come in to also do this. And it’s like so what’s the point of me being there? Yes I am not always there but you know I was working so yeah.

So sometimes a lot of times I had no work to do. If they just come in to the lab directly I handled it and handled it well.

This goes beyond just ablism. That’s straight up harassment and there’s absolutely no place for that behavior in the workplace. Unfortunately if the leadership isn’t willing to do anything your options are probably to take legal action or cut your losses and find a better work environment. I’m so sorry you’re experiencing that. Super shitty
