Question from a sighted person; How do you prevent yourself from burning/injuring your fingertips? And if that happens, are you still able to read Braille?(self.Blind)

I could be totally wrong but I think years of reading braille has made my fingertips less bothered by burns. I burned myself twice in about a 5 year span, the first time of which I started a new job proofreading braille the next day. There was no issue reading. In terms of avoiding burns, it's important to go slow and feel for the heat from a distance to avoid direct touch.

it's also a simple matter to test with the back of your hand. Braillists can be good guitar players - a bit like how sitting at a screen all day means you can still watch TV later. A little readjustment and you're good to go.
As a lifelong totally blind person who cooks for a family and reads braille daily I can honestly say regular burns aren't high on my list of worries.

You can’t prevent injury always but just being careful.
About burns being slow and testing things. If the source or food has heat rising off of it and you can’t get close then don’t directly touch it. If there’s a fire do what your parents say and don’t touch it use equipment. if it’s hot use oven mits and feel around.if it’s metal and just gotten out of the oven or something or a grill just turned off then don’t touch or be really careful and strategic where you touch. If you know the plate is hot, know where the plate is and touch the middle of it. Same goes for a metal hot tray. If the food is hot and not quite so hot touch it gently and lightly if it’s really hot don’t stay there. Or get so close or use a forke then blow it. But if you touch it lightly ore barely it won’t hurt you. Sometimes just touching really quickly also doesn’t hurt you.
With other injuries you can’t always avoid them use other fingers you’re not suppose to read braille with only one finger. Or with one hand. Sometime if the injry isn’t so bad you can use that finger or it will only take a day or two, if you know how to take care of it.
I have gotten paper cuts, I have gotten yarn burns from crochet and it’s get calus. I have got calus and scraped it off or cut it and skin can be sensitive so you read braille carefully. You can feel or kind of feel other things even if hands are injured. Generally I am a cautious person in general but no you can’t avoid injury all the time. Either that or you’d be very paronoid or excessively stressed. Some injuries heal quickly.

Prevent myself? Haha ... I don't. I foolishly touch hot pans, dip my finger in to taste the sauce rather than using a spoon (hey, only when I'm cooking for myself!), reach into the oven to check on the state of the potatoes, etc. all the damn time.
And yet, my fingertips are fine. Sure, I've gotten some very mild burns elsewhere on my hand, but I suppose fingertips are slightly tougher? And anyway, any mild damage heals up very quickly now that I'm still young, especially with some aloe vera gel.
It's all a matter of quick reflexes and good skincare afterwards. Or, you know, not being careless. But I haven't caught onto that yet.

I couldn't read braille anyway, I'm a guitarist for a living and I have huge callouses on my fingertips!
On the upside, that does help with heat resistance, I guess. And yes I do think that I probably ding my hands more than I would if I could see and honestly given the aforementioned thing I do for a living that is possibly not a very good thing.

You can read braille with those fingers, I have callouses, scars with loss of feeling, and more on my fingers and can still do it. I use the side of my finger sometimes.

Well possibly, but for that I might have to learn braille!
20 plus years into sight loss and still haven't done it, do as I say kids not as I do!

Lol true, I taught myself by playing with the braille keyboard on my phone, have not went back to using anything else for typing on my phone. I do not read it much, though need to get around to learning braille sheet music.

Just ask yourself, How often have you burnt your finger tip? That too both of them, entire finger tips? Yeah, tough chance that both of them are out of service. If the entire hand is burnt, reading braille is going to be last of worries.
And, these days, for me, braille is not the most important thing. If something hinders my ability to type or access computers, it's going to be way serious worry.

I got into wildfires + an unfortunate incident with a pre 80’s space heater as a kid, so my hands aren’t sensitive at all and have dead spots in them where I can’t feel anything. I’m blind. Reading Braille has been ongoing attempt with little success even if I use the back of my hands which have significantly less damage.

I'm surprised no one mentioned having induction furnaces ...

I echo wht others have said, you just have to be careful I use oven gloves when putting stuff into, or taking stuff from the oven, and a liquid level indicator, ( a little gadget that sits on the side of a cup ) when I make hot drinks. the rest of the time it's just using common sense. At least for me it is. *total from birth* should have said that earlier
