any other totals from birth really struggle with cooking?(self.Blind)
submitted by pisces0387
hi all first post here As per the title, just wondering, am I the only one who struggles with cooking? I am not scared of the heat or anything, so that's not the issue, it's just the motivation I struggle with. I live on my own, and the thought of having to cook stuff then wash all the stuff afterwards.... 😱 I know I should, really I do, I just can't find the motivation. Anyone else? And also any motivation you can pass on, feel free. Also, I should say, I have the thing I'm sure every blind person struggles with, the ' getting food from saucepans to dishes ' shenanagans, but that's not just me I'm sure.

Well sure, I don't feel like doing things sometimes, too. Cooking, washing dishes, cleaning floors and windows ... it's not so much a blindness thing though, just lack of energy.
It's a matter of making yourself enjoy the process and keeping the goal in mind. Trying out new recipes or making ones that bring you joy, for example. Putting on some good music, a podcast or an audio book. Washing what you can during cooking itself so that there's as little to do afterwards. And sometimes, if you really must, leaving that dirty pan soaking for a bit and coming back for it later.
Also, it helps if you use cooking to procrastinate on something else! Sure, I may not be studying, but I'm technically still being productive, right? :P

I never thought about using cooking as a way to procrastinate on something I like less. That's brilliant! I'm going to steal that idea and adopt it.

I'm not sure procrastinating on stuff is a good i ... just kidding. Hell yeah, procrastinators unite!

I'm not totally blind, but I can share some thoughts.
Cooking solo when you have the thought of cleaning up afterwards was always demotivating. It can feel like a lot of work for only a single fleeting moment of reward, followed by even more work.
One thing that helped me enormously was cooking for meal prep. Slow cooker recipes especially. It's much easier to motivate when all you need to do is dump everything into the pot and hit cook. And slow cookers are much safer than a stove or oven (important for an epileptic person like me). I can make a big soup or pasta or some other dish in the slow cooker and then freeze it to eat for the whole week.
It's much easier to muster up the motivation only once than to do it every evening.
Cooking for more people also helps. I live with a partner now and cooking for more than just myself makes the reward feel far more worth it than just cooking for me. I've also learned to cook larger portions in general which I can then save for leftovers, further multiplying the reward of cooking and making the cleanup feel worth it.

I am not the target of this post but I would say I need to cook more, used to before going blind a lot, have learned to do it again but still don’t much. It is just hard to feel like doing I’ve found, idk if that's the same for people who have been blind all along.

Major props. To everyone who actually meal preps. That sounds even more exhausting to me! 😱 I also get tired of the same thing over and over again. Not sure if anyone else has this issue? I really do think this is less of a blindness thing though and more of a single person living alone thing in general. Like I could cook if I put my mind to it, but I don’t see the point in making a huge meal for one person. I mostly eat chicken breasts, salads, and sandwiches. stuff with minimal cleanup and minimal waste. I always say come to my house, I’ll make sure you don’t starve but it won’t be gourmet! 🤣
Fresca20082 points1y ago
Same here. To be fair, I’m not sure how much of it is blindness and how much of it is just not wanting to do all that for one person. I know others Who can see perfectly well or the same way because they live on their own and just don’t have the energy to do all the cooking, cleaning up, etc. for one I know I should but I just don’t.

There are some cooking kits out there that basically give you all the ingridiants and instructions on how to cook recipes. I’ve had friends who hate the kitchen find these quite helpful.

I personally like to use an instant pot because it has multiple functions, is simple, clean, and you can make a bunch of different foods with them. Meal prepping is something that helps offset the frequency of needing to cook. Just make a bunch of food for the week and reheat it when you need to.

Not totally blind but I do not like to cook for myself either. Most days it is an inconvenient chore and a necessary evil I try to avoid when I can.
Meal prep helps me a lot. It lets me add cooking to chore day day when I do all the other necessary things that I try to avoid like cleaning, laundry, and yard work. I set aside part of that day to plan and cook all the meals I'm going to have during the week and turn them into little TV dinners that require minimal work to do final prep (like reheat or add wet vegetables) and eat. When I do this I not only eat better but if I do it right I save money as well by getting the most out of the ingredients I buy.
I may not like cooking for myself but I do like puzzles and challenges. When I look at meal prep as a challenge to see how many different edible meals I can get out of the same core ingredients it can even by kind of fun

That actually sounds like an interesting perspective.

I don’t think this has anything to do with blindness maybe personality temperment and strengths? I like cooking sometimes but generally not a kitchen person.
How old are you?
I think the older, more realistic and responsible I get and care about health a bit more I see the appeal. Going out isn’t healthy and buying frozen or premade food isn’t healthy. Buying healthy made food is expensive. Most restaurants are okay but a lot of them isn’t that healthy.

i'm in my mid-30s. and I think you're right, you either have the inclination or you don't, and I just don't 😂
TechnicalPragmatist1 points1y ago
Yeah, have you ever looked in to personality type tools I think that will answer more of these questions then a blindness thing I think you’re asking a more who am I what is my personality question hahaha! I figured this one out more because I like to study it. Sometime studying and reading them can give you a good view of yourself and for some blind people it’s healthy because you can pick up stuff for your strength and weaknesses and gives you more stuff to leverage and all. If that makes sense. No pressure but yeah.

I will look into this, thanks :)

Let me know if you want some help I’ve been studying jung for many years, haland codes is more work based but interesting the big five is the most validated and accepted but you can get stuff from other systems even if they are not quote scientific quote. A lot of it is theoretical stuff. Disc, enneagram jung, clifton strengths, many other things. The idea is self introspection and not obsession but learning about you.
This site is actually okay accessible. The eastern system is higher quality and much better quality stuff on the internet too. Though eastern profile lists me as probably liking to cook but I am a more logical masculine subtype that probably doesn’t and more so enjoys work. But this site.

I am not total blind, but, I still can't cook.
Afraid of hot things in general, and fire to me looks scary in general. Guess it's because of cupple of accidental burns in my childhood.
Nothing too serious though. I am sure that with propper tools and training, I'll manage to cook some day, that some day being when I am desperate.
pisces0387 [OP]3 points1y ago
so if you don't/can't cook, how do you manage? if you don't mind me asking? like do you live on your own? Have you found healthy ready meals or what do you do?
r_12351 points1y ago
I live with my family currently. Food is not my responcibility currently, although I do help out people whenever possible.
All I can manage is cutting fruits and potatos. That too, you have to be careful, as you can't detect if every vegitible or fruit is propperly cleaned, is free of any pests or is overripe or something.
