comic books and graphic novels (self.Blind)
submitted by lacitar
I still have a bit if sight left. I love comic books. I bought my first house using my older comic book collection as collateral.

Is there anyway I can continue to read them? Right now I pay a guy quite a bit of money to keep me up with my current ongoing series.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

NVDA the screen reader has an add-on called lion that can extract text from an image and read it off to you so perhaps if you can find one of your comics or monga digitally online you could try to see if the lion add on would read the pages to you? I’m not sure if there is an equivalent to lie and that isn’t digital but perhaps seeing AI might work for you? Seeing AI works especially well if you have one of the newer iPhones with a LiDAR sensor it can extract even hand written text and read it off to you so perhaps that might be a great optiont

Thank you. I'll try that as well. Looks like a lot of stuff is only on Apple. Time to change i guess

Check out Audable. They have quite a collection of books, such as Spiderman, X-Man, Star Wars,…

Will do!

I just recently discovered audio comics, which can be found on Youtube.

They can? Anyone's in particular?

So far, all I’ve found is Star Wars, but I’m sure there’s others like Marvel or other big franchises :)

I have had similar issues after collecting physical comics and graphic novels for decades. I've essentially switched to digital comics since I can zoom as far in as I need to, but it's not the same at all. I've tried to read my physical books with magnifiers with largely unsatisfying results. I miss reading my floppy issues but it's how it is now.

I feel the same. I'm considering selling them because I can't even enjoy them anymore

How much sight? Would a CCTV provide enough magnification?

Well, I started talking to the Lighthouse of the blind right when covid started. They weren't much help. I did not get to try anything besides the Ruby 7 pro. After that all our meetings were online. They told me I could retry once they started in person meetings. They wanted me to try learning Braille, but couldn't do it at the time. I called recently and was told they are still not doing anything in person.

Currently, I can see in 1 eye. But it changes a lot. I get a steroid shot once a month in each eye. I can't see anything for 24 hours. Then slowly the swelling goes down. It takes about a week. Then for 1 week my eye is okay. Before the next shot I can barely see anything. So my eye changes a lot in one month. I've already been told I will be completely blind in 5 years or less.

With the comics I can usually figure out if things are in color, but with black and white manga I have no clue what us going on. Not even when I use magnifiers

The Ruby is decent, but small. I was thinking more of the larger desktop CCTVs, like the ONYX or TOPAZ.

The larger screens would give you more area to see, and more stable.

May I ask what your eye condition is? You mentioned you have difficulties with the black and white manga, which is often easier to see because of the contrast. Does using different colour filters (such as reading black text on a yellow background) help?
lacitar [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Ah! Okay. I had never seen those. Thank you!

I have a few eye things. The lens on both eyes are detaching from the retinas, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and my eye muscles are getting weaker. My arteries in my eyes are bleeding. And I have physical pain when using my eyes for long periods.

With the mangas i can't seem to tell where things start and stop. Like is that line part of an arm or part of a special affect. I think with the comics in color, its easier for me to tell what us an arm and what is a special effect. But I'm losing that because I am losing my sense of colors. Like all dark colors are starting to look the same.

And yes, changing the colors often help. All the white in manga hurts my eyes.

Using a yellow filter might help, then. That would turn all the white to yellow, so slightly easier on the eyes.
