How does Guide dogs schooling business model works?(self.Blind)
submitted by r_1235
I am looking at several online sources, and finding out that guide dogs go for very expencive prices. I know that training them is expencive, but, I think it will be cheeper in my country, specially when I already have the land and the money.
So, the question is: how do finances of these guide dog schools work out? are they entirely donation funded? Is it okay if me or my friend enter this business with a little proffit motive? Most importantly, is shipping trained guide dogs to USA and other countries permitted under international laws?
Selling them just in my country won't be a financially sustainable option, hardly anyone uses them. So, it's very important that I am able to export them for a reasonable price at least.

I don’t think you understand how guide dog training works. I could write a novel here, but to simplify, what exactly is your understanding of how a guide dog team is created?

Yeah... just no

Most countries that protect guide dog handlers have programs in place to place fully trained guide dogs at either a highly subsidized price or free. So in order to make any form of profit off the dogs accounting for all the wash outs will easily put you out of budget for most if not all potential graduates. Then add in the consideration of the guide dog schools will offer much more graduate support than you probably can, and that many schools can place a blind handler with another free dog after the former retires in a couple months there is not really a reasonable way for you to compete with the non-profits.

Yeah, it doesn’t work like that.

Yeah, that's not how any of this works.

Ngl shipping for live animals is extremely expensive and it’s unlikely that anyone would want one in the first place? We have free programs that train dogs in nearly all states and you can always train your own with a local group like 4-H or Girl Scouts.

I wasn't aware there were for-profit guide dog schools. Most of the places I'm aware of in the US are charities who will at least give the dog itself free of charge, if not offer nominal support afterward.

Very sure that someone somewhere is paying for all those trainers and infrastructure. Any ways, We have a working farm, thought this would be a good side business, but, as people said, non-proffits might not allow a sustainable proffit orianted business in this sector.

Donations, fundraisers, endowments, etc.

Thank you all for all those replies. I guess, sometimes, online sources are too outdated or just disconnected from reality.
My knowledge of guide dog training is limited to what Google search told me. I was not thinking on doing it on my own, rather highering a team of professionals to do it. Any ways, seems non-proffits are way ahead in this field.
