Learning to Crochet (self.Blind)
submitted by blindbat84
Good morning! So I've decided to try and learn to crochet again after I had tried about ten years ago but misplaced my tools and just gave up.

That said, are there any active crocheters here and do you have any good resources or advice on how to learn? I have the foundation chain down but single crochet is coming out blobby and I tend to lose the hook on the third stitch forcing me to restart as I lost the working loop.

I think I'll need someone in person walking me through where in the chain stitch I insert the hook, I know which loop, but not under which strands of the three in the loop. Just want to also make sure that blobby starts are normal...

I hope to learn to make amigurumi but I am a long way from that.

Thanks!

P.S. I found a decent set of youtube tutorials that are a blind crocheter walking us through it but I'm still just not getting it.

Hey there, would you mind linking the YouTube videos you mentioned? I’m also very interested in picking this up, and will definitely be following any other replies here!

Here is the link to the first video, I had trouble seeing all of them on a browser when going to her channel but just looking up DMC 001 crochet youtube or DMC 002 crochet youtube on Google finds them easily if this becomes a problem. They all start as DMC ### with the title after, so combine that with the crochet and such it is easy to find.

Hope this helps.

I don’t really remember learning to crochet so I can’t really give you any resources that could help but here are a few things that could help;

Hold the never loop in your price slightly open with the same had that your holding your working yearn. I use my pointer finger and thumb to do that while using my other fingers to force the working yarn against my palm. I also like to use my pointer finger on my hook hand to feel any loops on the hook. This will help you figure out where everything is in relation to your hook.

It also sounds like your making your stitches too tight, which makes it easier to drop stitches. The yarn doesn’t need to be in a death grip around the hook. It should still be somewhat loose around the hook.

As far as bubbly single crochet stitches go, loosening up your work may help them lay flatter, but overall that will just have to come with practice. Everyone’s stitches come out slightly differently, so it shouldn’t effect your project too much.

I hope this helps!

Makes a lot of sense when I did it I did drop stiches and the yarn was pretty tight.

I crochet pretty regularly. I learned when I was a kid and I’ve worked my way up to some pretty elaborate stitches like the jasmine stitch. The key is getting the single crochet down. I would suggest having someone show you in person. My mom took my hands and showed me so I could learn what it’s supposed to feel like in terms of tension, pressure and position of the hook. Once you learn the single stitch well everything else is based on that. I still count all of my loops and all of my stitches. It takes longer but my projects come out nice and even.

My wife is a new crocheter, she has a YouTube of her journey. Give her a look.

Hi! I know that you found DMade Crochet confusing (I personally like it alongside other resources), but I think $1 is pretty useful. She does use 'this' and other non-descriptive words a couple times throughout the video, but it's generally easy to follow along with. Let me know if you have any more questions :) I'm learning the triple stitch now, so not totally advanced or anything but I might be able to help!

Thanks for this. I'll check it out. I did last night but fell asleep while listening. Will give it a better listen today when I'm more awake:.

I started because there was a class at the local braille institute. I wonder if there is such a thing at the whatever blind place nearest you. I think in person’s best.

The closest blindness center would be over four hours away so not viable here unfortunately.
